Cultural heritage as factor of peace

Meeting “UN Model – 2014” to the topic “Cultural heritage as factor of peace and stability – contribution of Turkmenistan” was held at the Institute of International Relations of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan. It was organized in the format of discussion round-table meeting and became joint initiative of higher school of diplomacy of our country and UN Regional Center for preventive diplomacy for the Central Asia.

Deputy Chief of the UN Regional Center for preventive diplomacy for the Central Asia Fyodor Klimchuk and senior teacher of the Institute of International Relations of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Soltan Pirmuhamedov made welcoming speech.

In particular, it was noted that alongside with other major factors, the richest cultural heritage, spiritual values, respect for traditions and customs, having centuries-old history, had direct influence on increasing international authority of Turkmenistan within the last years.

Speaking about this, the contributors emphasized such quite important aspect as intent attention of President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov to the preservation and augmentation of the richest cultural heritage of the Turkmen people.


At every international meeting or forum, the nation leader calls the partners for cooperation in this sphere, diligently underlining the significance of these issues for present and future generations. Turkmen land is rich in historic-cultural monuments, which are material confirmation of ancient culture of the people. Some of these monuments have been inscribed into UNESCO’s World Heritage List. To date, nearly 1500 historic-cultural monuments have been registered in the country. Tens of them are worth of submission for involvement into World Heritage List.

The head of state made a proposal on inscription into the List of original destans, carpet ornaments, and folk dances as valuable phenomenon of nonmaterial culture. It is also worth to add Garagum, Repetek, Badkhyz, Koitendag and many other wonderful parts of our country. Welcoming these proposals as priceless instruction, all teaching staff and students of the Institute of International Relations of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan considered their duty to make their contribution to this business. In other words, the instruction of the nation leader predetermined the program of upcoming activity, including for future diplomats, lawyers, economists and journalists.

Urgency of this event is conditioned with the fact that in modern and not simple world, the support of cultural identity, expansion of cooperation in this sphere is invaluable factor of stability both in national and global dimensions.

Political consultant of the UN Regional Center for preventive diplomacy Alexander Tolstuhin also delivered a report at the meeting and dwelled on the UN Convention of 1954 on protection of cultural values.

Subject area of excited and interested discussions expanded at “round table” included several directions. The matter on “Protection of cultural heritage in Turkmenistan” was widely highlighted in the context of reports of the students of the higher educational establishment – the future international affairs experts.

Colorful presentations prepared by the students with use of slides, photos, fragments from documentary films were devoted to such topics as “Ancient Merv”, “Ancient Nisa”, “Ancient Koneurgench”, “Turkmen heroic epic”, “Folk creativity”, “Natural resources”, “Decorative and applied art”, “Cooperation of Turkmenistan and UNESCO”.

Moreover, in organization and holding of this meeting, it was brought into play the press group from students of the journalism faculty, who are active freelance authors of several national mass media and programs of the state television.

The task of this group is not only wide coverage of round-table meeting in mass media, but also creation of basis of video materials, which will replenish the special video archives of the institute devoted to important and multifaceted mission of the Institute of International Relations of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan.
