Museums and libraries: new approaches

The conference of workers of the library and museum studies was held at the Mukams Palace of the National Cultural Center of Turkmenistan. Over 600 employees of libraries and museum specialists from the capital and provinces of the country as well as teachers and students of the State Academy of Arts of Turkmenistan, Turkmen State Institute of Culture and Turkmen State School of culture and arts took part in it.


The representatives of creative intelligentsia – writers, artists, theatre workers, and journalists of newspapers, radio and television also showed keen, vital interest in development of the library and museum studies in the country.

In the course of the forum’s work, it was discussed such urgent practical issues as introduction of new approaches and forms of activity, including formation of electronic catalogs of book funds, creation of single information system of the cultural institutions, electronic libraries and virtual galleries, as well as development of international cooperation, establishment of direct contacts with well-known museums of the world and large libraries, foreign restorers and others. In particular, employees of the Lebap Museum of History and Local Lore opened in September 2011 told about their working trips to museums of the USA and China.


It was also considered the prospects of development of museum and library studies in Turkmenistan in connection with modernization and expansion of the cultural infrastructure. So, the construction in Dashoguz province of library for 1 million books similar to the library opened in Mary will become a new step in this sphere. It will be a 7-storey building with modern book depositories, observatory, internet-café, computerized catalog, several reading halls, conference hall, and children’s amusement arcade.
