The 9th meeting of the Commission for the conservation, rational use of aquatic biological resources of the Caspian sea, and management of their shared Stocks recently concluded at the Caspian sea institute in Ashgabat. During the five-party meeting, the head of the Russian delegation, Vasiliy Sokolov, deputy head of the Federal agency for fisheries, shared his plans for cooperation with Turkmenistan with a «GA» correspondent.

«Russia cooperates with Turkmenistan not only on the five-party agenda, but also advocates for a bilateral format, as it allows for the resolution of far more issues, often specific to only two countries», - said V. Sokolov.

In this area, the Russian member of the commission named the issue of organising joint scientific research as a priority.

«In particular, this involves conducting joint research, which could yield a much more positive impact. We expect to conduct bilateral research with the Turkmen side, as this is a very important sector for us, and developing bilateral cooperation in this regard is extremely important», - our interlocutor emphasised.

At the same time, V. Sokolov noted the high importance for all Caspian countries of the work of groups to control and monitor fisheries activities.

During the 9th meeting, the current state of joint stocks was analysed, the results of scientific events were presented, and issues related to the reproduction of ichthyofauna species were discussed. Following the meeting, the Commission decided not to conduct commercial sturgeon fishing in 2026.

Turkmenistan will chair the Commission for the period 2025–2026.
