Ahal-teke horses − living monument of history

For many centuries, the swift Ahal-teke horses have been the «wings of the soul» of the Turkmen people. Historical facts indicate that the lineage of the Ahal-teke horses goes back to ancient times. Excavations have shown that the Ahal-teke horse was domesticated in Turkmenistan five thousand years ago.

Turkmen horses, which were bred in early times and were ideally formed by breeders, have had a positive influence on the improvement of many horse breeds in the world. As Hero-Arkadag notes in this regard: «Mentions of swift-footed steeds are found in the works of ancient scholars, chroniclers and poets, such as Herodotus, Strabo, Aristotle, Homer, Ovid, Virgil, Xenophon and others». Moreover, horse bones and other finds discovered during archaeological excavations in Anev, Margush, Gonur-depe, Altyn-depe and other sites in our country indicate that it was in our homeland that horses were first domesticated and their breed improved.

Our ancestors also paid great attention to preserving the purity of the Ahal-teke horse breed over the centuries. And today, a lot of work is being done in this direction, including the revival of national horse breeding traditions. As a result, national equestrian art has reached a new level, large-scale work is being carried out to develop equestrian sports, train a younger generation of equestrian masters and horse breeders, and international cooperation in this area is developing.
