19-year-old FIDE Master Amanmuhammet Hommadov became the Turkmenistan chess champion, winning the top league tournament held over ten days in Ashgabat. This success was the first for the 2nd-year student of the Turkmen state institute of physical education and sports, who took first place in the open category.

The championship title was contested in two rounds by the 8 strongest chess players who had passed a series of qualifying tournaments.

Amanmuhammet Hommadov demonstrated consistent and effective play throughout the championship and deservedly won the title of national champion, scoring 11 points in 14 games. The national champion of last year, 3rd-year student of the Turkmen state institute of architecture and construction, Vepaly Halynyazov, who came in second, was 1.5 points behind him.

Two years ago, both sportsmen, as part of the men's team of Turkmenistan, won small gold medals at the 45th World chess Olympiad in Budapest (Hungary), where our chess players took first place in the «B» category and 24th place among 188 teams in the overall standings.

Last year, Amanmuhammet Hommadov confidently won the first Grand-prix tournament established by the Chess federation of Turkmenistan. And now, for the first time, he has been awarded the chess crown of the men. The success of new champion is rightfully shared by his mentor, honoured coach of Turkmenistan Serdar Annaberdiyev.

National vice-champion Vepaly Halynyazov began playing chess at the 13th sports school in Turkmenabat under coach Guljahan Ovlyakuliyeva. For the past three years, he has been improving his game at the Ashgabat specialised chess and checkers school under the guidance of Aynur Isayeva.

For the second year in a row, the head coach of the Turkmenistan women's team, Shahruh Turayev, won bronze, with a score of 8.5 points, he outscored Ilhan Charyyev, a 12th-grade student from School №26 in the Lebap velayat (rating 2187), demonstrated a worthy performance and confirmed his high level of preparation.

1st-year student of the Turkmen state institute of physical education and sports, Ahmet Gubatayev (rating – 2176), also showed a good result, scoring 7.5 points. His performance was an important contribution to the overall level of competition and confirmed the competitiveness of Turkmen chess players.

Based on the results of the major league, the national team of Turkmenistan has been selected to participate in the 46th World chess Olympiad, which will take place this September in Samarkand, Uzbekistan.

The men's team, in addition to the three prize winners of the current championship - A. Hommadov, V. Halynyazov and S. Turayev, included international grandmasters Saparmyrat Atabayev and Meylis Annaberdiyev, as leaders in terms of rating indicators. As previously reported  the women's team of Turkmenistan at the main team competition of the year will be represented by the four best chess players from the 2026 major league: Lala Shohradova, Jahan Rejepova, Mahri Agamyradova, Ogulsuray Bayrambayeva, and Leyla Shohradova, who holds the highest FIDE rating on our team, which allowed her to compete in the open category among men this year.
