President of Turkmenistan Proposes in Astana Establishing Regional Environmental Centers under UN Auspices

Speaking on April 22 at the Regional Ecological Summit in Astana, President of Turkmenistan Serdar Berdimuhamedov called for the consolidation of efforts among Central Asian countries in addressing global climate challenges.

The head of state emphasized that climate change is leading to a reduction in water resources, land degradation, and an increase in migration processes, which necessitates expanded cooperation with international organizations, primarily the United Nations.

As a practical mechanism for cooperation, the President of Turkmenistan proposed establishing specialized structures within the countries of the region. In particular, Ashgabat has put forward an initiative to create a Regional Center for Climate Technologies and a Regional Center for Combating Desertification.

President Serdar Berdimuhamedov placed special emphasis on the fact that locating these centers directly in Central Asia would enable a more effective and timely response to environmental threats, drawing on practical experience and close interaction with national institutions.
