Rational use of water –a priority task

The synthesis of tradition of rational use of water and leading developments enable the water economy of the country to be one of the fundamental basis of the national economy, particularly, for the agro-industrial complex. Providing the cities and villages with life-giving moisture, modern mirabs create conditions for dynamic development of economy, fulfil the most important social function. Turkmenistan is located in the dry region with limited quantity of water resources. All inter economic irrigational and ameliorative projects in the country are on the balanced of departments of the ministry of water economy of Turkmenistan and are maintained at the expense of state means. At that, this wealth should be used very rationally.

The main source of water of the country is the Amyderya as well as resources from rivers Murgab, Tejen, Etrek, small water reservoirs and underground waters. At present, at the piedmont of the Kopetdag small water reservoirs, which help rational use of water resources of this mountain system, are constructed. Moreover, such small water reservoirs avoid the destructive property of seasonal floods, and turn their moisture into the most valuable resource. Construction of water economy erections equipped with water resistant geo-membranes are widely used. Bagyr water reservoir is also among such water reservoirs.


As noted in his commentary by the head of the department of exploitation of the Management of exploitation of the ministry of water economy Yanov Pashyev, among new technologies which are taken for modern mirabs – introduction of progressive methods of irrigation, particularly, trickle and overhead irrigation which gain more and more wide application. In this sphere, workers of the water economy have already gained rich experience. Such technologies first of all have a very high efficiency. As compared with tradition irrigation, the overhead irrigation significantly reduces use of water.

As the practice shows, overhead irrigation is more highly demanded where there is a necessity of frequent processing and change of sowings upon cultivation of seasonal crops as for example, the same wheat taking a significant place in the structure of sowing in our country. Or the intermediate crops sown in the areas freed from harvest of winter wheat. A large overhead irrigation is capable of irrigating tens of hectares of land per night and serves the area as much as two hundred hectares. So, the necessity for irrigation of the plot of average peasant associations could fully satisfy by tens of such machines.

Leading foreign companies of agricultural machines are interested in Turkmen market striving represent here the best technologies and projects. The practice of approbation of a new technology and equipment enable to select those machines, equipment and equipment for operation in Turkmen market, which are ideally capable of local climate conditions.

Overhead irrigation equipment today is considered by specialists as one of the most prospective and progressive methods of irrigation. Yet today economies, entrepreneurs actively introduce it into practice. The easy-term credits help them to implement here. The conditions of allotment of loans are favourable- an easy-term credit is allotted for purchase of agricultural machinery and equipment including water saving machines and irrigation water pipes for the term of 10 years with a yearly interest of 1 %. The possibility of taking a new loan is subject to a wide circle of agricultural producers –peasant associations, and economies, farmers, and tenant farmers, entrepreneurs and research institutions.

Trickle irrigation is actively introduced and applied for irrigation of forest zones, orchards and vineyards.

As noted by the head of the department of research of the Institute “Turkmensuwylymtaslama” of the Ministry of water economy Gurbanyaz Khommadov, in the last years as an experiment trickle irrigation was begun to be used in cotton fields and other cultivated areas , particularly , in cotton fields in Akhal and Dashoguz province. It has been established that upon cultivation of cotton with application of the system of trickle irrigation the quantity of technologies of operation and expenses on handwork are significantly reduced.

The promising application of collecting and drainage waters for irrigation of crops in light-textured soils helps to use the potential for a wide network of the Turkmen lake being built now. He collecting and drainage waters, first of all, wastewaters, now become the important additional resource. Turkmenistan clearly demonstrates the model for efficient use of water discovering new resources of this life-giving moisture. Taking into account the dry climate of the region, such rational use of water makes a firm basis for stable development of the country for a long-term basis.

Turkmen scientists develop the best methods for development of lands along new watercourses, chose suitable salt resistant crops so that to ensure the most optimal exploitation of the grandiose hydro-engineering project. Thanks to the Turkmen lake, the vast sand pastures are irrigated and it is useful both for cattle breeders and for strengthening of fodder supply. This project also tells upon the flora and fauna of the Garagum positively as well: collectors, as the lake itself, will be a real paradise for birds, basis for further development of fishery.

Thanks to the Turkmen lake, the level of ground waters has fallen in many oases of the country and it means that it provides fertility of irrigated lands –the basis of the agro-industrial complex. The saving of water at the expense of due methods also reduces the necessity for washing irrigations.

Realization of large-scale complex program on restoration of lands, increase of fertility, introduction of water saving technologies continues. The goal of it is that in order to apply the leading world practice will help us to save a drop of highly valued water carefully.
