Socio-economic development of the country is accompanied with the increase of demand for transport services from the part of population and national economy. According to the data of the State Committee of Turkmenistan for statistics, the share of transport in the gross domestic product (GDP) of the country has come in 2011 to 4.6 percent, in 2012 – nearly 4 percent and in 2013 – 4.3 percent. In 2014, the contribution of the transport-communication complex in GDP of the country increased by 13 percent as compared with the previous year. Share of the value added over this complex in GDP in the last year came to 5.6 percent.

In the modern stage of development, basic, structural and institutional reformations are realized in the sectors of transport complex. It is created the legal foundation of the activity of the transport sector corresponding with new socio-economic conditions. It was divided the functions of the state management and economic activity as well as created the system of the state regulation of transport activity adequate to the market conditions.

In 2013, it was started the realization in Turkmenbashi city of one of large-scale transport projects – the construction of new international seaport, which will become major part of modern transport infrastructure and allows bringing to qualitatively new level the economic and trade cooperation between countries of Asia and Europe, attaching powerful impulse to interregional ties for long-term prospect, as well as open huge possibilities for optimization of traffic flows on Eurasian space. Delivery of regular modern vessels is a bright confirmation of systematic and successful solution of important task on rapid formation developed transport infrastructure and national sea fleet.

Railway sector of the country alongside with other spheres also gained significant successes. It was put into exploitation transnational railway “North-South”, which functioning as the shortest steel way for exit of the European state to Persian Gulf will bring to the increase of the volumes of transit freights, being transported on the territory of Turkmenistan, contribute to the development of economy of neighboring countries.

The head of state underlines that creating the conditions for international transit, it is necessary to envisage the joining to them of our internal territories with their richest resources. In the last years, modern air station complexes, buildings of train stations fitted with leading technique were put into operation in all parts of Turkmenistan. It was laid thousands kilometers of steel roads and wide strips of autobahns, engineering edifices – railway and road bridges.

Alongside with construction of motor roads, joining regions, it is planned the creation of high-speed motor roads (autobahns) corresponding with the international standards. It has been started the first such project in our country: construction of Ashgabat-Turkmenbashi autobahn.

According to forecast of the specialists, it is expected that the flows and volumes of freights transported through territory of our country will increase year by year.

As the data of the State Committee of Turkmenistan for statistics testifies, within 2014 as compared with 2013 it was formed the high indices of works of all kinds of transport over Turkmenistan that reflects positive dynamics of economic growth of the country.

Activity of cargo transport, which depends in many respects on development level of production sectors, being the largest exporters and importers of freights, particularly brightly demonstrates this fact.

Turkmen railroaders proceeded to the construction of Ekerem-Madav railway and in this year will complete the construction of Atamyrat-Imamnazar (Turkmenistan) - Akina section of new Turkmenistan-Afghanistan-Tajikistan railway.
