Camel breeding is historically established tradition of the Turkmen cattle-breeders and today, this sector is important source of production of healing foodstuff – meat and milk, as well as the warmest wool.

By the beginning of 2015, 125.5 thousand camels are kept in all farms in Turkmenistan. The greatest portion belongs to Akhal and Balkan regions – over 42 thousand in each. Elite animals are bred in pedigree farms “Sakarchaga” (Mary province), “Turkmenistan” (Balkan province), “Karakum” (Akhal province).

Major trends of selection work in camel breeding are further improvement of pedigree and productive qualities, creation of separate lines, families and improvement of types. Scientists and specialists of the Institute of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Science of the Academy of Sciences of Turkmenistan jointly with the specialists on veterinary science and zootechnics of pedigree farms make contribution to this activity. As a result of scientific-practical researches of many years, it was created highly productive dairy type of camels of Turkmen breed arvana in the pedigree farm “Sakarchage” with one-time yield of milk in 2500 kg, milk fat content 3.8 percent.

Milk of female camels is very useful: as compared with cow's, it contains three times much C and D vitamins and at that, quite less lactose (milk sugar) and casein, which prevents our organism to digest dairy products. Production of this valuable product has good prospects in home and foreign markets.

In connection with necessity to assure orderliness of realization through state net of cultured milk foods of camel breeding, it was worked out and approved the state standards on beverage from camel’s milk, agaran and doyran beverage.
