The conference “Achievements of statistical system to serve the society” brought together specialists of ministries and departments, higher educational institutions, the Academy of Civil Service under the President of Turkmenistan and UNDP Office in Turkmenistan in the Turkmen capital. The forum was held on occasion of the Second World Statistics Day, which was celebrated on October 20 in accordance with the Resolution of the UN General Assembly. The World Statistics Day this year was observed under the theme “Better data, better lives.”
The legal framework of the national statistical has been strengthened and the coverage of the statistical indicators of economic and social development of the country has been expanded in recent years. The systematic improvement of the industry includes regular update of basic data comparable with international standards, introduction of advanced methodologies and use information technologies for the collection, processing and transmission of statistical data.
The scientific and methodological principles of statistics and new reporting forms and statistical tools are developed in accordance with the Programme on developing the financial-economic and banking system of Turkmenistan for 2012-2016.
The important steps taken to ensure the legal groundwork for this sphere include the adoption of the Law of Turkmenistan "On Statistics", which regulates the unified state policy in this area and meets the demands of the state and society in reliable scientifically based information. The Law envisages the basic principles of statistics in Turkmenistan developed in accordance with the UN international standards.
Those speaking during the forum noted that the implementation of national and international financial reporting standards had contributed to the development of statistical studies. A number of methodological projects in the field of social statistics, cost-of-living statistics, statistics on employment, investment, services, private sector of the national economy among others were developed based on the best international practices.
Improvement of the system of socio-economic indicators allows identifying the main relations, trends and directions of the core changes in the social, economic and environmental areas of the country. The use of modern methods of data encoding makes is possible to compare the national macroeconomic indicators with the level of development of the world community.
The forum participants presented reports on the role of the national statistical system in identifying the tasks on the socio-economic development of the regions, the importance of this sector in improving the gender policy, training specialists in this field, key factors of statistical estimations and monitoring in various sectors of the economy and the prospects for the further development of the statistical service.
