Mission Entirely Possible

Our country’s famous artists have undertaken a mission to get the staff of the U.S. Embassy acquainted with the Turkmen nation’s history, culture and everyday life through their paintings. They take turns in showing their creations in makeshift exhibition spaces: the walls of some offices and halls at the Embassy.

Rotating monthly exhibitions offer diplomats insights into works by Turkmen artists that may seem unusual for Westerners.  From the first days, newly arrived officials have the chance to learn more about our country’s centuries-long history and are invited to embark on a painterly journey to see the ruins of ancient cities, join caravans travelling along the Silk Road in the scorching sun and to enjoy a cool respite from the heat in a long-awaited oasis and on the banks of a mountain river flowing through trees. Artists’ works provide a unique window into the people’s rituals and traditions, the riches and natural bounties of our land. Paintings by Mary-based artist, Merited Art Worker of Turkmenistan Kossekmurad Nurmuradov are currently on display at the U.S. Embassy.

“My fellow townsman Kurbangeldy Kurbanov exhibited his works before my exhibition. Earlier, works by Ashgabat-based artist Akmurad Mukhammedov had graced the walls of the Embassy. Both of them are Honored Artists of Turkmenistan. That list includes a dozen other gifted artists, all unique in their own way. Although we all have our distinctive personal styles, genres, and signature subjects, we are united by a love for our beloved home country and our people. This is amply demonstrated by the works exhibited at the Embassy. Our artists are highly sought-after to participate in many exhibitions. Critics say that their works captivate western viewers by original color palettes, light effects, symbolism, and vibrant compositions”.

Works by Kossekmurad Nurmuradov hold a special place for the U.S. Embassy. Commissioned by American diplomats, he has created his largest painting. The wall painting, which spans almost 50 square meters, embellishes the Embassy’s entrance hall. The artist’s refined style that has become more confident and elegant over the years delights with a stunning blend of bright colors and soaring imagination. Paintings by Kossekmurad Nurmuradov are fascinating portrayals with an array of subjects, depicting scenes of everyday life, traditions and customs of the Turkmen people.
