The meeting of the people of Ashgabat with Professor of the University of Warsaw Barbara Kaim, who led the Turkmen-Polish archeological expedition to the east of the Serahs oasis in the south-east of Ahal Velayat for over 15 years, took place at the hall of antiquity in the Museum of Fine Arts in Ashgabat. Bright evidences of the high culture of Turkmens’ ancestors, who lived there over 2,000 years ago, were discovered during the excavations in the ancient settlement of Mele-Heyran. Numerous findings, including unique pieces of ancient art, distinguished by unquestionable artistic features and unsurpassed techniques, are exhibited in the Museum of Fine Arts in Ashgabat.

Mele-Heyran is a small hill in the Serahs oasis at a distance of 15 kilometres to the east from the present administrative center of this etrap. In ancient times and middle ages, a reinforced point of caravan trade was located there, approximately halfway between Nishapur and Merv. The Serahs oasis formed in the old delta of the Tedjen River (Gerirud in ancient times) was a densely populated territory with highly-developed irrigation for many centuries.

The excavations of the Turkmen-Polish archeological expedition that is a joint project of the National Department of Turkmenistan for Preservation, Study and Restoration of Historical and Cultural Monuments and the Institute of Archeology under the Warsaw University, have been successfully held under the supervision of Professor Barbara Kaim since 1997 and are reflected in a series of her scientific articles published in Turkmenistan as well as leading archeological journals of Europe, the US and Russia.

The meeting that brought togetjer the people of Ashgabat and representatives of the diplomatic corps accredited in our country was organised by the Ministry of Culture of Turkmenistan and the Embassy of the Republic of Poland in Ashgabat.
