Scientists from all around the world discuss the historical and cultural heritage of the Turkmen people

The conference entitled “The mediaeval cities of Turkmenistan in the system of Eurasian civilization” started in Turkmenistan.

The main goal of the conference that brought together participants from more than thirty countries of the world is to familiarize the world scientific community with the results of scientific researches in the material and spiritual culture of Turkmenistan, and to promote the wide exchange of experience in the sphere of preservation, study and popularization of medieval historical and cultural monuments located on the territory of Turkmenistan.

World-known scientists, famous historians and sociologists, ethnographers and archeologists, culture experts and philologists, as well as outstanding representatives of the scientific community, who jointly with their Turkmen colleagues take an active part in studying and preserving the unique monuments of the material and spiritual culture of Turkmenistan have taken part in the conference. Among them - Doctor of Historical Sciences, Professor, and Laureate of Magtymguly International Prize Victor Sarianidi, who has made a significant contribution to study of the history of Turkmenistan and devoted fifty years of his life to studying the historical monuments of Ancient Merv.

It is also important to mention the prominent foreign scientists taking part in the work of joint archeological expeditions in Turkmenistan, including Timothy Williams (UK), Barbara Cerasetti (Italy), Nikolaus Boroffka (Germany), Nadejda Dubova and Victor Pilipko (Russia), Albert Burkhanov (Tatarstan, RF) and others.

The International scientific forum dedicated to the role of medieval cities of Turkmenistan in development of Eurasian civilizations has been held in the very important year for Mary that was announced the 2012 CIS cultural capital. This fact underlines the significance of the history of Turkmenistan, in particular – Ancient Merv, in development of universal civilization, in the system of cultural relations of civilizations within many centuries.

As is known, the unique Turkmen museums under the open sky, including Ancient Merv, Kunya-Urgench, and Nisa were registered in the UNESCO World Heritage List. A number of unique historical and architectural monuments and natural objects of Turkmenistan were nominated for inclusion into the UNESCO World Heritage List. Among them are the medieval cities located along the Silk Road.

The solemn ceremony of opening of the International scientific conference entitled “The mediaeval cities of Turkmenistan in the system of Eurasian civilization” took place in the conference hall of the Turkmen State Institute of Culture. Cabinet ministers, heads and representatives of the Academy of Sciences of Turkmenistan and academic institutions, a number of ministries and departments of the country, higher educational institutions as well as journalists and students attended the ceremony.

Upon completion of the plenary sitting, the forum participants and guests got acquainted with the exhibits of the exposition arranged at the spacious foyer that vividly told about the Turkmen people’s culture, its ancient traditions, original art and modern achievements.

In the afternoon the international conference continued its work during five sessions, including “International cooperation on preservation and study of the historical and cultural heritage of Turkmen people”, “Sources and historiography of the history of medieval cities of Turkmenistan”, “Medieval cities of Turkmenistan in the system of the Silk Road”, “Development of material culture in medieval cities of Turkmenistan”, “Development of science and culture in medieval cities of Turkmenistan”. The conference participants presented a number of interesting reports dedicated to various aspects of studying and preserving the national historical and cultural heritage.

Particular attention was paid to interdisciplinary relations, and the methods of historical urbanism, compare of written sources with archeological materials. The reports dedicated to the monuments of the Parthian culture and the early Middle Ages, culture and municipal engineering, popularization and restoration of the historical and cultural heritage, achievements in the sphere of aero- and space mapping of ancient oases and use of digital technologies for processing archeological materials, etc. aroused keen interest among conference participants.
