As the most important task of the national economy of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov put domestic products into foreign markets and the expansion of trade and economic relations of our country with foreign partners. This largely depends on the degree of involvement of Turkmenistan in the global and regional transport and communication systems, which are the material basis and tool of commodities exchange between the states.

In this regard, in our country it is carried out an active extension of the logistics network to implement projects on transport provision of trade linkages, and routes that can take on the growing volume of transit traffic in the direction of Europe - Asia and back.

According to the State Statistics Committee for the period of January-August 2016 more than 1.7 million tons of transit cargo has been transported through the territory of our country. The majority of them were transported by railway (61.5 percent) and motor car (34 per cent) transports.

During the same period, 31.3 thousand trucks units, 6.2 percent more than in the corresponding period of 2015 proceeded through the territory of Turkmenistan. The greatest share of their cars belongs to Turkey - 52.3 percent and Iran - 37.2 percent.

The volume of services rendered in the transportation of transit, export and import of goods by rail amounted to 122.9 million US dollars in the period of January-August 2016, including transit freights - 74.5 million US dollars for export - 42.3 million USD, for imports - 6.1 million US dollars. The total volume of these services in comparison with January-August 2015 was increased by 8.8 percent. This was mainly due to the increase by 7.2 per cent of the volume of services for the carriage of goods in transit, which belongs to 60.6 percent in the total volume of cargo carriage services, as well as due to the growth of export of goods by 43.8 percent. At the same time, 56.4 percent of the volume was reduced services for the transportation of imported goods, which is a consequence of success realized by the state program on replacement of foreign products with domestic goods.

The main goal of the state transport policy of the leader of the nation Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov specified the formation of a highly efficient national transport system designed to meet the demand for transportation of goods and passengers, increasing their safety and quality, creation of conditions for investment activity, increasing the competitiveness of domestic carriers in domestic and foreign market of transport operations and services.

In January-August 2016 by all modes of transport (other than pipeline) transported more than 6 million tons of export cargo, which is 6.7 percent more than the same period of 2015. Export shipments were carried by water transport (52.1 per cent), automobile (29.6 percent) and rail way (18.2 percent) and air transport (0.1 percent).

Imports of goods in January-August 2016 transported in the amount of more than 3.1 million tons, which is 25.3 percent less than in the corresponding period of 2015. In its freight, the main share belongs to the road transport (51.7 percent). Rail transport belongs to 34 percent, water transport - 14.1 percent, and air transport - 0.2 percent.

In comparison with January-August 2015 the growth rate of volumes of export cargo transportation of export cargo by rail made consists of 47.1 percent, automobile - 17.2 per cent, air transport - 7.1 percent. The volume of transit cargo in January-August this year compared to the same period of 2015 air travel increased by 2.2 times, and water - by 2.5 times.

In a market economy, it is a forefront issue of the need to improve the quality of transport services through the application of advanced transportation technologies, providing fundamentally new competitive services. Strategic orientation of development of Turkmenistan considers implementing of one of the most important national resource - the transit potential of the country through domestic transport communications.

Therefore, the competitive transport corridors in formation in the territory of our state meet both external and domestic economic interests. An example of this is preparing for the commissioning of the first stage of the Asian international railway corridor, an initiative of creation of which belongs to the head of state Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov. This length of road is Atamyrat-Imamnazar (Turkmenistan) - Akin (Afghanistan). At the same time it is planned commissioning of the terminal for receiving, storage and shipping of oil products at the customs point "Imamnazar". This event will coincide with the holding in Ashgabat Global Conference on the Sustainable Transport System.

In the future, the Asian transport and transit corridor should play a significant role in promoting international cooperation and the development of the entire region; bring direct and significant benefits to all participating countries from the large-scale project.

The transit is export of transport services, and expanding export capabilities is a key area of economic and social policies of President of Turkmenistan. Transit is a direct cash receipts in the form the payment of transport and related services, investment in development of infrastructure, the introduction of the most modern technologies, creation of new jobs, etc.

Analysts carefully calculate the transport expenditures of the trade flows of traffic routes by land and water, exploring the relationship between the development of transport and the growth of trade. Today, many experts agree that the trade between Asia and Europe will be the most dynamic market, and maximize the benefits will be benefited those countries that will be able to attract inter-regional flow of goods into the country’s communications.

In this context, the aim of the transport policy of President of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov, is to fully realize the advantageous geographical position of the country and the enormous potential of transport infrastructure as a natural transit bridge between Europe and Asia.
