Over the last few years, the Altyn Asyr Closed Joint Stock Company has occupied a leading position in the provision of mobile communication services in Turkmenistan. As compare to the beginning of 2007, when 35,000 subscribers used the Altyn Asyr services, today, their number has increased up to five million. Last year, the number of Altyn Asyr subscribers increased by 430,000. More than 198,000 users were connected to the Internet.

Due to the complex modernization of this sector, over 97 % of the country are covered by cellular communication. Only 160 base stations were installed in the country last year. Turkmen specialists developed a mobile communication development programme for remote rural areas. 40 2G and 3G stations will be installed in the villages in Ahal Velayat. 60 mobile telephony exchange stations will be installed in other regions of the country.
