From 3 to 4 April 2024, the regular session of the Intergovernmental Committee for Physical Education and Sport (CIGEPS) is being held at UNESCO headquarters in Paris. The session is attended by the Chairman of CIGEPS, Minister of Sports of Chile Jaime Pizarro, Assistant Director-General of UNESCO for Social and Human Sciences Gabriela Ramos, former Chairman of CIGEPS, Minister of Youth and Sports of Azerbaijan Farid Gayibov, heads of relevant UNESCO departments, representatives of member states of the Intergovernmental Committee on Physical Education and Sport (CIGEPS) and non-governmental organizations. The delegation of Turkmenistan, consisting of the Ambassador, Permanent Representative of Turkmenistan to UNESCO M.Charyev, Head of the International Department of the State Committee of Turkmenistan for Physical Culture and Sports Sh.Seryaev, takes part in the session.

The 2024 CIGEPS session will focus on the follow-up to the 7th International Conference of Ministers and Senior Officials Responsible for Physical Education and Sport (MINEPS VII), during which more than 110 Member States endorsed the MINEPS VII Baku Outcome Document, establishing the “Fit for Life Alliance”. This Global Alliance brings together representatives from the private and public sectors to support the implementation of the Fit for Life program at the national and international levels.

The Secretariat will report on progress made in Fit for Life's priority areas, which include developing the social and environmental legacy of major sporting events, strengthening the evidence base for the impact of sport, scaling up investment in sport, championing gender equality and safeguards, combating racism, expanding youth empowerment and unlocking the potential of the African sports ecosystem. An overview of UNESCO's high-level activities for 2024 in connection with the Olympic and Paralympic Games will also be provided.

On November 16, 2023, during the 42nd session of the UNESCO General Conference, Turkmenistan was elected as a member of the UNESCO Intergovernmental Committee on Physical Education and Sports for 2023-2027.
