Organizational issues of the coming winter crops harvest were discussed and start date was defined at the session of the Cabinet of Ministers of Turkmenistan on June 2. Harvest campaign starts in Ahal, Balkan, Lebap and Mary Velayats on June 7 while in Dashoguz Velayat on June 14.
Soft breeds of winter wheat, which is harvested before the heat of the summer, are grown in soil and climate conditions of Turkmenistan. There are around twenty soft breeds cultivated. Such precocious and popular breeds as “Sahrai”, “Juvan”, “Yeloten – 1” and “Bitarap” cultivated by Turkmen selectionists and showing good results in arid conditions are still in crops rotation. New high-yield breeds of Stavropol selection like “Bat’ko”, “Vassa”, “Irishka” and “Krupinka” were introduced recently to domestic crops production for breed renovation and replacement. Existing breeds are being tested, perspective ones are being selected and high-yield old breeds are restored at the scientific experimental fields of the scientific and Research Institute of Agriculture.
There was intensified preparation of machines and equipment at the crops reception facilities as well as preventative maintenance of crop harvesters and vehicles for the last few weeks. Around 1500 combines «Case», «New Holland», «John Deere», «CLAAS», will be involved in the harvest time; their stable work will be provided by more than 30 mobile maintenance teams.
Regional meetings with participation of specialists of the Ministry of Agriculture and Water Management, General State Service “Turkemnstandartlary”, where leaders of farmers associations, agronomists, machine operators and grain growers were invited, took place all around the country. Experts of the Ministry of Agriculture and Water Management visited crop fields in different climate zones of the country for estimation of the harvest.
According to the government plan for agricultural production in 2017, grain growers will have to harvest 1 600 000 tons of wheat. Grain crops territories of the country are located on fixed areas of 860 000 hectares all around the country. Considering soil and climate conditions in the regions, good irrigated lands are allocated for growing of wheat. Considerable volume of wheat is produced by the grain growers of Ahal velayat where more than 220 000 hectares are allocated for this culture. Mary and Lebap farmers also give good crop yields.
