In Ashgabat, a seminar was held to present a new two-year "land" project with the participation of the scientific and technical structural divisions of the Ministry of Agriculture of Turkmenistan.
The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) is providing scientific and technical support to the project. A pilot site is planned to be located in one of the farms of the Yoloten etrap of Mary velayat, where preparatory activities have already begun. Soil sampling and analysis will be conducted here to determine the chemical composition, along with monitoring of crops and agrotechnical measures aimed at improving the yield indicators of traditional and less cultivated crops, as well as land productivity.
The seminar's training program will include workshops and open "field days" to demonstrate the results to both agricultural producers and the wider agricultural community.
Communication with farmers will be carried out through "farmer schools," an experience Turkmenistan has gained within various long-term agroecological projects that have been jointly implemented by two ministries—the Ministry of Agriculture and the Ministry of Environmental Protection—who are the main partners of FAO in Turkmenistan.
Based on the results of practical research, the collected material with specific results will form a recommended list of methods tested under Turkmenistan's conditions. These methods are capable of improving the condition of agricultural lands and will help farmers to reassess the process of cultivating useful plants and plan crop rotation. In addition, familiarization trips are planned for leading specialists to exchange experiences in other countries with similar soil and climate conditions.
