Cotton Sowing Campaign Launched in Turkmenistan

Today, an important agricultural campaign—the sowing of cotton—has begun across the country. In accordance with the directive of the head of state, farmers in the Ahal, Balkan, Dashoguz, Lebap, and Mary velayats have actively commenced the sowing season.

At a Cabinet of Ministers meeting held via digital system on March 20, the President of Turkmenistan Serdar Berdimuhamedov gave his blessing to begin cotton sowing in all velayats of the country on March 25. He also asked respected elders to inaugurate the campaign with the words “Bismillah” and wished the hardworking cotton growers and all agricultural workers great success in their efforts.

Following a cherished national tradition, respected elders offered prayers to the Almighty for the well-being and prosperity of the Motherland, the Turkmen people, and the head of state. They then cast the first cotton seeds into the soil before handing over the work to mechanized operators.

Cotton growing, which is a priority sector of the country’s agro-industrial complex, places particular emphasis on the introduction of innovative technologies and economic incentives for producers. Thanks to large-scale state reforms, farmers are systematically supplied with high-performance machinery from leading global companies, high-quality seeds, and essential mineral fertilizers. All of this creates favorable conditions for strict adherence to agronomic standards and lays a solid foundation for a future abundant harvest.

To improve agricultural practices, consistent measures are being taken to enhance the land reclamation condition of soils, taking into account the climatic and soil characteristics of each region. At the same time, based on the latest achievements in breeding science, new early-maturing, pest-resistant cotton varieties with high fiber quality are regularly introduced into crop rotation. Seed preparation at cotton ginning enterprises in accordance with international standards ensures steady growth in the sector’s production capacity. The cultivation of new cotton varieties is a key factor in increasing both the volume and quality of production. The development and implementation of high-yielding, high-quality varieties is a crucial requirement for the advancement of the industry. This work is being carried out at the Research Institute of Cotton Growing.

The cotton harvest provides a valuable raw material base for Turkmenistan’s textile industry. The high-quality cotton fiber produced in the country is in strong demand on the global market. Today, finished products manufactured at modern textile complexes are distinguished by their environmental friendliness and high quality. This clearly demonstrates that cotton cultivation is important not only for agriculture but also for the continued dynamic growth of the national economy and the strengthening of the country’s position in the international economic system. This year, thousands of hectares of land have been allocated for cotton cultivation. The upcoming harvest will enable textile enterprises to operate at full capacity and enhance the country’s export potential.

The rational use of water resources is currently a top priority. Modern water-saving technologies, including drip irrigation systems, are being widely introduced in the fields. This approach makes it possible to achieve high yields under the unique climatic conditions of each region, preserve soil fertility, and ensure efficient water use.

To mark the start of the sowing campaign, musical and cultural events were organized in the velayats. As part of the celebrations, exhibitions of agricultural machinery and products from processing enterprises were held. Performances by musical, folklore, and dance groups from the regions became a creative gift for tenant farmers and cotton growers.

The harvest being sown today in the fertile Turkmen land will serve as a reliable foundation for the achievements of the independent Motherland in a new historical era and for the prosperous life of its people.
