On 30 July 2026, during his official visit to the Kingdom of Thailand, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Turkmenistan to Malaysia M.Mashalov met with United Nations Under-Secretary-General and Executive Secretary of the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UNESCAP), Ms. Armida Salsiah Alisjahbana, at the UNESCAP headquarters in Bangkok. The parties reviewed the current state of cooperation between Turkmenistan and UNESCAP and discussed prospects for strengthening collaboration in sustainable development, economic cooperation, climate change adaptation and combating desertification.

Particular attention was paid to the initiative of the President of Turkmenistan to establish a Regional Centre for Combating Desertification for the countries of Central Asia in Ashgabat. The interlocutors also highlighted the importance of Turkmenistan's participation in COP17 in Mongolia in August 2026 and the 83rd session of UNESCAP in Shanghai in April 2027.
