The “Arkadag” football club will take another step onto the international stage by hosting a preliminary-round match of the 2026/27 AFC Champions League Two. The champions of Turkmenistan will face “Goa,” the winners of the Indian Super Cup, for the right to compete in the group stage of Asia’s second most prestigious club tournament.
According to the draw conducted by the Asian Football Confederation (AFC), the match will take place on August 12 at Arkadag Stadium. The winner of the single qualifying match will secure a place in the group stage of the AFC Champions League Two, while the losing team will continue its international campaign in the group stage of the AFC Challenge League.
The Turkmen club enters the new Asian season with solid international experience. In the 2024/25 campaign, “Arkadag” won the AFC Challenge League, claiming the first international club trophy in its history. This success earned the team a place in the 2025/26 AFC Champions League Two, where it performed commendably, collecting seven points in the group stage, finishing second in its group, and advancing to the knockout stage.
In the new edition of the Asian club competitions, Turkmenistan is already guaranteed representation in the group stage of the AFC Challenge League. This right was secured by “Ahal,” the runners-up of the 2025 Turkmen championship, who qualified directly for the tournament. Now, Turkmen football has the opportunity to secure representation in the AFC Champions League Two as well. To achieve this, “Arkadag” must defeat the Indian club.
The upcoming match is expected to continue the successful history of encounters between Turkmen teams and Indian clubs on the international stage. In recent years, Turkmenistan’s clubs have repeatedly defeated Indian opponents. In 2018, “Altyn Asyr” convincingly overcame “Bengaluru” in the AFC Cup Inter-Zone Semi-finals, winning 5–2 on aggregate. In August 2024, the Ashgabat-based club defeated “East Bengal” 3–2 in Kolkata in the AFC Champions League Two qualifiers, and several months later “Arkadag” eliminated the same Indian club in the quarter-finals of the AFC Challenge League. Another important victory for Turkmen football came from “Ahal,” which defeated one of India’s strongest clubs, “Mohun Bagan,” 1–0 in Kolkata in September 2025.
However, the future opponent should not be underestimated. “Goa” earned the right to compete in the AFC Champions League Two qualifiers by winning the Indian Super Cup, convincingly defeating “Jamshedpur” 3–0 in the final. Moreover, last season the team successfully advanced through the qualifying round by defeating Oman’s “Al-Seeb,” gaining valuable experience of competing in the tournament’s group stage.
The match in Turkmenistan promises to be one of “Arkadag’s” most important fixtures of the current season. A victory would allow Vladimir Bayramov’s side to once again compete among the continent’s strongest clubs in the AFC Champions League Two, while defeat would leave the team with the opportunity to continue its international campaign in the AFC Challenge League.
The group stage of the 2026/27 AFC Champions League Two is scheduled to begin in September, and on August 12 it will be decided whether “Arkadag” can once again represent Turkmenistan in Asia’s second-tier club competition.
The 2026/27 AFC Champions League Two will be the 23rd edition of Asia’s second most prestigious club football competition organized by the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) and the third edition under the name AFC Champions League Two. A total of 32 teams will participate in the group stage. The tournament winner will qualify for the preliminary stage of the 2027/28 AFC Champions League Elite, provided it has not already qualified through its domestic league performance.
