view-icon 1854
Over two thousand rare sorts of Turkmen pear registered in the Red Data Book of Turkmenistan grow in the Central Kopetdag. This plant is endemic to Kopetdag and found nowhere else. Therefore, these populations are of vital significance for preservation of gene pool of the sort for flora of our planet. The employees of the Kopetdag State Nature Reserve carry out monitoring of their condition. At present, part of population of wild Turkmen pear tree is protected on the territory of the Kopetdag State Nature Reserve.

A whole number of individual population of wild type, growing at the height up to 1900 meters above-sea level on arid and rocky slopes of gorges have been found and are under study. It is a heat-loving, winterhardy and disease-resistant plant. At the age of eight years, the pear tree starts to flower in April and fruit- in August. Duration life of the tree is usually 50-80 years and at favorable conditions – up to 300.

Wild pear tree possesses high winter resistance and drought resistance, good immune properties and fitness to saline soils. It is a vegetable material adapted well to local conditions for landscape gardening of the nature conservation zones of Kopetdag.

Turkmen pear sharply differs from the European sorts that became a foundation to distinguish it as a separate variety. It is possible to say that bulk of modern local rear sorts has complicated hybrid origin formed from direct descendants of wild pear tree.
