The Turkmen sportsmen won two medals in three international tournaments in draughts which brought together participants from ten countries in San Remo (Italy).

A tenth former of school 1 from Balkanabat Maksat Durdyev won the silver medal of the U16 Junior World Championship. The 16-year-old reigning world champion in draughts 100 in the two-round junior qualification tournament from Turkmenistan gained 14 points. Gennaro Bruno (Italy) gained the same number of points. The victory which M. Durdyev gained over the Italian sportsman in the direct encounter allowed him to rank the second in the World Championships. An Italian draughts player Alessio Scaggiante gained 20 points and ranked the first in the tournament.

A coach of the Balkan Velayat sports school Gultach Madanova won the bronze medal in the women’s qualification tournament of the Draughts 100 World Championships. A ‘hostess’ of the tournament Erika Rosso from Italy ranked the first in the women’s qualification tournament. She will play a world title match with the world champion Amangul Berdyeva.

A world title match between A. Berdyeva and E. Rosso will take place in 2012. According to rules, the rivals will play 20 games. If they have an equal number of points, 24-year-old Amangul Berdyeva will keep her world title.

A student of the Balkanabt branch of the Turkmen Polytechnic Institute Bayshim Durdyev ranked among the top five sportsmen in the men’s qualification tournament of the World Championships.
