For preservation of ecological welfare of the Caspian region

Caspian ecological forum, being organized on the initiative of Turkmenistan under the aegis of the United Nations Organization, started its work in the National Tourist Zone “Avaza”. The representative delegations of Republic of Azerbaijan, Islamic Republic of Iran, Republic of Kazakhstan, Russian Federation, Turkmenistan as well as United Nations Environment Program (UNEP), United Nations Development Program (UNDP), UN European Economic Commission and other authoritative international organizations arrived here for discussion of issues of further cooperation in the field of preservation of the ecological welfare of the Caspian region.

In the course of the forum, it was reviewed the work, being carried out in the Caspian region on practical realization of major nature conservation conventions of UNO, including jointly with provisional Secretariat of the UN Framework Convention for marine protection of the Caspian Sea, UN European Economic Commission.

In this connection, it was underlined the necessity of further development of contractual and legal base, preparation of new pentalateral intergovernmental agreements, regulating various kinds of activities in the Caspian region, particularly in the field of preservation and rational use of biological resources of the Caspian Sea, cooperation in the sphere of prevention of extraordinary situations and liquidation of their consequences. At present, the experts of the Caspian states and international organizations actively work at them.

Within the framework of the sessions held after plenary meeting, the participants of the forum shared experience of realization in their countries of multi-aspect ecological programs and projects, discussed attainments and prospects of international cooperation in the ecological sphere. Particular attention was paid to the introduction and use of the latest technologies while realization of economical activity in the Caspian region as efficient method of prevention of ecological problems.

It was also discussed the issues of preservation of the Caspian ecosystem in conditions of development of oil and gas deposits, monitoring of the state of the Caspian Sea by means of space satellites and technologies, efficient management of arid coastal territories, desertification control and other topics.
