For the first time in the history of Turkmen sport three athletes will represent Turkmenistan at the XXX Olympic Games, which will take place in London in 2012. Two athletes represented Turkmenistan in the Olympic tournament in previous years. This became known after the results of the World Weightlifting Championships had been announced in Paris where athletes competed for quota place in the 2012 Olympic Games.

The number of quota places in the Olympic Games depended on what place a national team will take in the two recent world championships: in Antalya (Turkey) in 20101 and in Paris in 2011. By using a simple point scoring system the quota places were distributed among only 24 countries: the first six teams are to qualify six quota places, the next six teams – five quota places, the teams which rank from 13th to 18th - four quota places and the teams which rank from 19th to 24th - three quota places.

Eight athletes represented Turkmenistan in six weight categories. And all of them gained the points. The leader of our squad, a participant of the Olympic Games in Sydney in 2000, Athens in 2004 and Beijing in 2008 Umurbek Bazarbaev ranked among the top five sportsmen in the under 62 kg category and established two new national records – in the snatch event – 168 kg and in the combined event – 303 kg. Tolkunbek Hudaybergenov (under 69 kg) and Mansur Rejepov (under 85 kg) from Dashoguz Velayat and Hojamuhammet Toychiev (over 105 kg) from Mary established the national records in the snatch, jerk and combined events. A student of the National Institute of Tourism and Sport Jasurbek Jumaev established the national record in the snatch jerk event (163 kg) in the under-94 kg category.

The Turkmen weightlifters ranked the 15th in the team tournament. They ranked the 21st in the 2010 World Championships in Turkey. Based on the total number of points gained in the two world tournaments the Turkmen team ranked the 19th and won three quota places and took the lead over such countries with the rich weightlifting traditions as France, Germany, Thailand, Georgia, Moldova and Romania.

Honoured Coaches of Turkmenistan Ikram Matkarimov and Artur Emirian led the Turkmen team to this success. The National Olympic Committee, the State Committee for Sport and Sport and the National Weightlifting Centre provided significant support and assistance in preparing our weightlifters for the World Championships.

The best sportsmen, whose names will become known in 2012 after a series of the national qualification tournaments, will represent Turkmenistan at the Summer Olympic Games in London.
