Meeting of the Interdepartmental Commission for the Caspian Sea

At the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the country, it was held a regular meeting of the Interdepartmental Commission of Turkmenistan for the Caspian Sea, where it was discussed the results of work within 2012 and outlined the tasks for the near future.

Members of the Commission, which includes the officials of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ministry of Oil and Gas Industry and Mineral Resources, Ministry of Nature Protection, State Enterprise for the Caspian Sea at the President of Turkmenistan, State Committee for Fish Industry, State Frontier Service, several sectoral Research Institutes and others, took part in the meeting.

In the course of the meeting, it was discussed the priority trends of activity of the Commission, including on preservation of ecological welfare of unique natural water reservoir, unification of the efforts of the world community in solution of environmental protection issues, development of projects of documents, corresponding with the norms of international law and related to the legal status of the Caspian Sea, cooperation in the field of prevention of extraordinary situations and liquidation of their consequences as well as in the field of hydrometeorology.

Being consistent supporter of maintenance of peace, cohesion and stability on the region of the Caspian basin, Turkmenistan comes out for constructive dialogue on the basis of the interests of all parties and unification of common efforts in realization of prospective projects and complex approach to the solution of tasks set before neighboring states in all spectrum of issues of the Caspian agenda. Major principles, determining the position of Turkmen state in the matters of international cooperation, are the good will, equality, mutual respect and sound pragmatism. Full and all-round realization of multifaceted potential of the Caspian Sea and its coast is of strategic significance for economics of all neighboring countries, including Turkmenistan.

International forums held in Ashgabat in the last year became effective step on the path of making concerted decisions on various aspects of the Caspian agenda. A regular meeting of Special Work group on development of the draft of Convention on legal status of the Caspian Sea at the level of Deputy Foreign Ministers of the Caspian states as well as two regional meetings devoted to the discussion of the draft of Agreement on preservation and rational use of biological resources of the Caspian Sea are among them. Officials and leading specialists of core ministries and departments – fish industry, nature management and environmental protection, other state structures of Azerbaijan, Iran, Kazakhstan, Russia and Turkmenistan took part in these meetings.

It was also underlined the significance of the Caspian Ecological Forum held in the National Tourist Zone “Avaza” in November 2012. Representative delegations of the Caspian countries as well as United Nations Environment Program, United Nations Development Program, Economic Commission for Europe and other authoritative international organizations participated in it.

At that, it was underlined the suitability of further advancement of initiatives of President of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov announced at the 66th session of the UN General Assembly on giving to this forum of the status of standing international body urged to become the dialogue platform for consideration of issues of environmental protection and making of their optimal decisions.

In the course of the current meeting, it was approved the work program of Interdepartmental Commission of Turkmenistan for the Caspian Sea for 2013 taking into account the chairmanship of our country in the Coordination Committee for hydrometeorology and pollution monitoring of the Caspian Sea. Among events planned for the near future, it is worth mentioning the holding of the international training course “Caspian Sea – sustainable development and management” in nature conservation structures, relevant ministries and departments of Turkmenistan.
