The first junior (U17) ice hockey tournament for the Turkmenistan President’s Cup has started today. Eight teams split into two groups are participating in the tournament organized by the State Committee for Sport of Turkmenistan and the National Winter Sports Centre. Group A consists of HC Oguzkhan of the Turkmengaz State Concern, HC Silver Lions from St. Petersburg, the Russian Federation, HC Raubichi-96 from Belarus and the team from the United Arab Emirates. Group B is composed of Galkan HC of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, the junior team from Turkey, HC Khimik from Moscow Oblast and HC Neftyanik from Almetyevsk, the Russian Federation. These teams will compete in the preliminary rounds.

The group winners and runners-up will qualify for the semi-final that will define the two contenders for the trophy of the international tournament. The semi-finals will take place on February 16. The final, where we hope to see the Turkmen hockey players, will be held on February 18. The tournament organizers invited the world-renowned referees from Latvia to judge the matches which will take place on the ice arena of the Winter Sports Centre in Ashgabat.

The referees’ high qualification is proved by their long experience in refereeing the major international sporting events, including the Ice Hockey World Championships the Republic of Latvia hosted last year.

The first matches for the Turkmenistan President’s Cup in Group A and Group B between HC Oguzkhan and HC Silver Lions, HC Neftyanik and HC Khimik respectively has been held on February 11.

Two G4 and G5 U18 tennis tournaments finished last Saturday in Muscat, Oman. The young sportsmen from Turkmenistan ranked among the four best tennis players in singles and doubles.

The International Sambo Tournament is currently taking place in Minsk, the capital of the Republic of Belarus. Turkmenistan is represented by 12 athletes, for whom the tournament in Belarus is an important stage in preparing for the Central Asian Sambo Championship which will traditionally take place in Ashgabat next month. The final of the international tournament in Belarus will be held on February 12. The team of Turkmen judokas and Greco-Roman wrestlers will perform in the international tournaments which will take place from 16 to 17 February. Judoka will compete for the medals in Oberwart, Austria and Greco-Roman wrestlers in Aarhus, Denmark. These competitions are some kind of preparation for the 2016 Summer Olympic Games in Brazil. The programme of preparation of Turkmen athletes for the major international competitions includes the participation in sporting events as well as a series of training sessions overseas. 20 athletes of the national team of weightlifters are having training sessions in Kemer, Turkey these days. Another resort city of the brotherly country Antalya will be the venue for training sessions of Turkmen football players from 15 to 25 February. Eight Turkmen chess players will have training sessions in the capital of the Russian Federation.
