The press conference “Turkmenistan-UN: the Official Launch of the Process of National Consultations to Define the Post-2015 Global Development Framework” for representatives of Turkmen and foreign media accredited in our country was held at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan. MFA officials and representatives of a number of UN agencies attended the forum, along with journalists.
UN Resident Coordinator, UNDP Resident Representative in Turkmenistan Ms. Jacinta BARRINS commented on the event.
In particular, she said 189 countries of the world had gathered in 2000 to develop the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). Turkmenistan intends to elaborate the national report on the achievement of the Millennium Development, and the UN stands ready to offer assistance in it. It is supposed that the Millennium Development goals are to have been achieved by 2015. The question therefore arises: which instrument will be used to measure human development after 2015.
The process on the post-2015 global development framework is supplemented by the national consultations to be held in 66 countries worldwide. Ms. Jacinta Barrins emphasized that it was the joint initiative of the Turkmen state and United Nations under the guidance of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan.
The plan of national consultations was developed by the Turkmenistan-UN Task Group. The aim of the process of national consultations is to involve all the layers of Turkmen citizens in discussion on the future they want after 2015. Their voices, along with many others, will be compiled in June this year contributing to the UN Secretary General report to be presented to the UN General Assembly.
The plan of national consultations provides for interaction with six target groups. These are public organisations representing the interests of different groups of Turkmen society, including the vulnerable groups, such as people with disabilities; farmers, urban and rural entrepreneurs; government officials; members of the Mejlis and local authorities; youth, schoolchildren under 15; parents of children under 7.
The national consultations in Turkmenistan are expected to run until late May of 2013. The results of the work done by the six target groups, which will be incorporated in the report together with those of other 65 states who have undertaken commitment to hold national consultations, will be compiled and submitted to the UN Secretary General.
