The International Conference "Diplomacy of the Great Silk Road: From History of Future" timed to the 5th anniversary of the Institute of International Relations under the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan closed in Ashgabat.
Conference participants were foreign diplomats and representatives of the scientific communities from over 20 countries worldwide, including Armenia, Azerbaijan, Afghanistan, Belarus, Bulgaria, UK, Georgia, Iran, Japan, Kazakhstan, Norway, Pakistan, Portugal, Russia, US, Turkey, Tajikistan, Ukraine, Japan and other countries, along with Turkmen specialists.
Great Silk Road that existed in ancient times and the Middle Ages played a critical economic and political role in the lives of the peoples of Asia and Europe. The process of studying comprehensively and restoring the traditions of the Great Silk Road as 'a path of dialogue', some kind of bridge that connected the peoples of East and West in their aspiration for friendship and cooperation has become topical in the 21st century.
Incarnation of the Great Silk Road in modern times is the TRACECA Interstate Programme implemented with the assistance of the European Union to develop the Europe-Caucasus-Asia transnational transport corridor. These are also the ambitious international energy, transport and communications projects initiated by our country, including the Turkmenistan-China gas pipeline, the Tejen-Serahs-Mashhad railway and the North-South transit transport corridor. The initiative to develop the transport development programme aimed at exploring the prospects of transit transport development between the Caspian and Black Seas, Central Asia and the Middle East put forward by President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov at the 66th session of the UN General Assembly is aimed at promoting partnership in this area.
Dozens of reports and presentations on a number of topical issues were made and discussed during the plenary meeting and four conference sections. It was noted during the closing ceremony that the reports and presentations contributed to discovering new scientific facts and promoted a substantive exchange of views on various aspects of the study of the phenomenon of the Great Silk Road.
