The Week of Health and Happiness initiated by President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov to mark World Health Day celebrated worldwide on April 7 is gaining momentum throughout Turkmenistan. The main sporting events that took place in Ashgabat on the second day of the Week include the finals of the city ice hockey tournament. HC Oguzhan and HC Yas Olimp, the teams of the Turkmengaz State Concern and the State Committee for Sports competed for the gold medals. HC Oguzhan, the silver medallists of the first international ice hockey tournament which took place in the Turkmen capital in February, gained the decisive victory 4:0 in the final.
HC Oguzhan is going to win another champion’s title in the competitions with five other teams, including the team of the sports school of the State Committee for Sports, HC Galkan of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, HC Nesil of the Institute of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, HC Merdan of the State Border Guard Service and HC Vatanci of the Military Institute of the Ministry of Defence, on April 5-6. The last two teams will participate in the ice hockey tournament for the first time.
The city junior weightlifting tournament is not less interesting to watch. Particular attention should be paid to the under 32-kg category winner Begmyrat Baijaev. It is just that he is the youngest participant of the competitions: Begmyrat is 10 years old. In regard to weightlifting we should note that the national junior team of Turkmenistan returned home from Turkey yesterday where they had had training sessions in Kemer. Turkmen athletes are preparing for the world championship which will take place from April 6 to 13 in Tashkent where they will contend for the benches in the Second Youth Olympic Games. The city junior tennis tournament that took place in the courts of the Ashgabat sports complex brought together about 60 young tennis players that competed for the medals in doubles and singles. Soon, our athletes will perform in the Davis Cup tennis, the largest international team competition in the world, which will be taking place from April 21 to 30 in Yangon (Myanmar). The Turkmen team will compete for the medals in the Asia/Oceania Zone Group. Two other sporting events took place at the Galkynys sports complex, the fencing tournament and the Family Health sports action.
The velayat junior weightlifting tournament started in Dashoguz yesterday. Best sportsmen from all over the region, the champions and prize-winners of various tournaments and competitions participated in the events. Strong rivalry in the team and individual tournaments is expected to arise between the weightlifters from Dashoguz town and Gurbansoltan eje Etrap who are the leaders in this sport in the region.
The relay multi-sports race involving schoolchildren of the boarding schools from the town on the Amu Darya River took place in the outdoor sports arena of sports school 2 in Turkmenabat. The sports school hosted the two-day mini football tournament between the teams of education and sports institutions representing all the towns and etraps of the eastern region of the country. The sports competitions under the slogan “Who is faster?” between school teams were fascinating. The tournaments in gymnastics, weightlifting and a walking tour, in which over 2,000 people participated, took place in Galkynys Etrap on the first day.
The tournaments in football, volleyball, tennis, athletics and other sports started in Seidi, Magdanly, Gazacak and the etrap centres, and youth from the centre of the oil refining and energy industries of Lebap, Seidi town will receive a wonderful present at the end of the Week – a new sports school for 365 young athletes.
Over 5,000 sportsmen and fans of sports and healthy lifestyles – citizens and guests of Mary town walked along the path of health in the early morning of yesterday where a mass race, in which youth set the pace, took place. The race finished in the square of the Ruhiyet Palace in the centre of Mary. The sports grounds and gyms of the main stadium in the region were the venue for competitions and exhibition performances of young athletes from general and specialized sports schools of the region on that day. A marathon was held on the central streets in Parahat village, the administrative centre of Altyn Asyr Etrap.
