The first meeting of the joint working group to implement the Memorandum of Understanding between Turkmenistan, the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan and the Republic of Tajikistan on the Turkmenistan-Afghanistan-Tajikistan railway project was held at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan. The government delegations of the three countries participated in the meeting.
The meeting participants discussed the prospects for implementing the project of the new railway line between Asian countries that would be an important transportation link in the region.
As is known, the Intergovernmental Turkmen-Afghan Framework Agreement on the Atamyrat-Ymamnazar-Akina-Andhoi railway was signed during the official visit of the President of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan to Turkmenistan in May 2011. The initiative to build the railway from Turkmenistan to Afghanistan and extend it across the territory of Turkmenistan was put forward during top-level talks. The project provides for the construction of two railway sections: 85-km Atamyrat-Imamnazar line across the territory of Turkmenistan and the 38-km line from Imamnazar to Andhoi across the territory of Afghanistan.
During the meeting the Turkmen side informed the Afghan counterparts that the design work under the Atamyrat-Imamnazar railway project had been completed. The subdivisions of the Ministry of Rail Transport of Turkmenistan are to build the railway section. The Afghan delegation put forward the proposal to involve Turkmen specialists in preparing a feasibility report and building Imamnazar-Akin line in the territory of Afghanistan.
