Presently, the young of rare hoofed mammals - goitered gazelles, onagers, wild rams and others, which were born this spring, grow up in the nature reserves and nurseries. Most of them have been inscribed into Red Data Book of Turkmenistan. This responsible time is quite restless and troublesome period for employees of the nature reserves. It is complicated task to observe, accurately count and fix how much increased the number of the young of rare animals.

Females hide their baby animals from predators, because in the first days, they are absolutely unprotected. The employees of the nature reserves can determine the place, where the mother hides her offshoot, artlessly in the lambing period, making the rounds and marking on the map where and how much baby animals of goitered gazelles, onagers or wild rams were born. Then, the inspectors of the Ministry of Nature Protection of the country observed how dams rear their baby animals. It happened that the female couldn’t rear the two or nurse enough the firstling or the baby animals lose their dam because of some reasons. It is zoologists, who determine this fact, observing by binocular. In such cases, the baby animals are placed in the nurseries of the Nature Reserve, where they are brought up in accordance with special technology.

The nurseries at the State Nature Reserves of the country are functioning since 2008. Their task is the breeding of particularly valuable animals inscribed into Red Data Book and cultivation of rare and weakly renewable plants in nature. Further, the animals return to the nature, plants are also replaced to habitual residence within the particularly protected natural territories, buffer zone around them as well as places, where it is necessary the reforestation.

At that, only a person is charged to take care of wild animals and particularly, fearful gazelles. He, in turn, strives to do it, avoiding their habituation to him and remain tameless in order that these animals will be capable for unassisted life in nature in future.

In this year, it was also rescued several baby animals, who got thoughtful human “parents”. The young, who lost their dam, were delivered to the nurseries of many Nature Reserves. For example, gazelles inhabit practically everywhere – in the mountainous Kopetdag and Sunt-Hasardag, desert-and-steppe Gaplangyr and Repetek Nature Reserves, in pistachio savannas Badhyz and in Ogurjaly Island of Hazar Nature Reserve, which has a small population of gazelles delivered from Badhyz. As a whole, eight State Nature Reserves and fifteen nurseries are functioning in Turkmenistan.

Lambing of wild hoofed mammals takes place in February-March. Prior to it, during mating season, the herd keeps together and then, the males leave them and females graze separately. As far as it is the winter period, the places of feeding are arranged for hoofed mammals in most frosty periods. Such situation takes place in summer as well. Watering places are organized for animals in particularly hot days.

At present, the young animals got stronger at their mothers and passed long ago to pasturage, grow up and their brothers about whom the employees of the nurseries at the Nature Reserves take care. What is their afterlife? First of all, they prepare to make up for population of their congeners in the wild nature in the places, where they fell, as well as in other soil and climatic zones of Turkmenistan. For example, the group of gazelles bred in the second generation of half-wild animals is moved from Badhyz to Gaplangyr steppes, from the territory of Kopetdag Nature reserve – to the regions of deep canyons of Sunt-Hasardag and etc. It is done for renewal of gene pool and improvement of the state of local populations in various parts of Turkmenistan.
