CABSI Conference

The 11th Conference of the Central Asia Border Security Initiative (CABSI) organized by the Government of Turkmenistan jointly with the Federal Ministry for the Interior of the Republic of Austria, the European Union (EU) and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) started in the Turkmen capital.

The delegations of the Republic of Kazakhstan, Kyrgyz Republic, the Republic of Tajikistan, the Republic of Uzbekistan, the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan, the People's Republic of China, Japan, the Russian Federation, the US, the Turkish Republic as well as Austria and other countries, members of the European Union arrived in Turkmenistan to take part in the forum. The heads and representatives of the diplomatic missions accredited in Turkmenistan, including the head of the UNDP Resident Representative Office, the UN Regional Centre for Preventive Diplomacy for Central Asia, the OSCE, etc. participate in the conference.

Among the delegates to the conference are the representatives of such authoritative international organizations as UNHCR, the UN Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), the International Organization for Migration (IOM), the International Centre for Migration Policy Development (ICMPD), the Central Asian Regional Information andCoordination Centre for combating the illicit trafficking of narcotic drugs (CARICC), the International Latin American Foundation for Public Administration and Public Policy (FIIAPP) and many others.

Within two days, the representatives of the international and regional organizations, the UN and EU agencies, law-enforcement agencies, border and migration services of the countries will exchange their experience in the sphere of border security. The conference agenda includes the issues of modernization of the border control system, combat against illicit traffic of narcotic drugs, corruption as well as transborder cooperation between the Central Asian countries and Afghanistan.

Opening the meeting, the conference participants underlined the importance of the security and control of the borders in Central Asia as a significant task for the whole region. In this regard, all interested parties take an active part in providing assistance to the Governments of the Central Asian states and ensuring the effectiveness of partnership with neighboring states and international partners. The Central Asia Border Security Initiative (CABSI) is aimed at increasing the efficiency of the regional cooperation to ensure the security and control of borders.

During the press conference taken place within the framework of the forum, it was noted that Turkmenistan as a CABSI member is planning to continue the work aimed at fostering the efforts to guarantee the security of borders. Noting that one of the forum sessions will focus on border cooperation between the Central Asia and Afghanistan, those speaking at the press conference underlined the significance of the Turkmenistan President's initiatives aimed at the social and economic revival of the neighboring country and the active regional integration of Afghanistan with the Central Asia.

Summing up the first day of the 11th CABSI Conference, it was noted that the forum served as an open platform for exchanging the practical experience in this sphere, developing the balanced approaches to solution of the important tasks to ensure the security of borders.
