The plenary session of the "Energy Security and Sustainable Development - the OSCE Prospect" International Conference took place at the conference hall in the Oguzkent Hotel in Ashgabat under the chairmanship of the President of Turkmenistan.
The heads and high-ranking representatives of the international organizations, political and diplomatic circles of the OSCE member states, leading oil and gas companies, businessmen and scientists arrived in the Turkmen capital to take part in the conference. The delegates representing over 60 countries will participate in the forum.
In his opening address, the President of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov said that energy security and the elaboration of a long-term strategy of joint work in this sphere are the key areas of Turkmenistan’s co-operation with the OSCE. The President of Turkmenistan underlined that the solution of the problem on ensuring the energy security that is very important for almost all OSCE members had an influence of the sustainability of the geopolitical situation on the continent as well as the character and content of the macroeconomic processes.
Speaking during the session, OSCE Chairperson-in-Office, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine Leonid Kozhara paid particular attention to the key priorities of the Chairmanship of Ukraine in OSCE in the sphere of energy security, including the economic and environmental aspects as well as the security of transporting the energy resources and using innovations in achieving the efficiency of energy, etc.
The OSCE Chairperson-in-Office also presented the agenda of the working sessions of the forum.
OSCE Secretary General Mr. Lamberto Zannier noted that the international cooperation in the energy security issues opened up great opportunities for fruitful cooperation between the suppliers of energy resources, consumers of resources and transit countries. "The OSCE multilevel approach towards the energy security issues and wide representation of the member states, including large energy suppliers, consumers and transit countries vividly demonstrates our potential", noted the OSCE Secretary General in his address.
Speaking about the support provided by the international community to Turkmenistan's active position in solution of the energy security issues on the regional and global levels, Deputy-Secretary General of the United Nations, Executive Secretary of the UN Economic Commission for Europe Sven Alkalaj noted that the UN Economic Commission for Europe expressed the readiness to support the further initiatives of Turkmenistan in this area.
