The second final day of the work of WHO European Ministerial Conference on the prevention and control of noncommunicable diseases in the context of Health 2020 has completed in the Turkmen capital.
In the first half of the day, a session on topic “Strengthening of national responses” was held in the capital’s “Oguzkent” hotel. Within its framework, it was presented the reviews of relevant experience of member states, national systems of public health developed on the basis of the results of inspection of the countries’ potential in the field of prevention and control of infectious diseases held by the WHO.
After completion of the session, the presentation on topic “Role of civil society” was held for the participants of the forum. It was conducted by the Director Emeritus of the WHO Regional Office for Americas Mr. George Alleyn. The final event of the work of the WHO European Ministerial Conference became the adoption of the Ashgabat Declaration on the prevention and control of noncommunicable diseases in the context of Health 2020.
Solemn signing ceremony of the final document took place in the conference hall of “Oguzkent” hotel. Here, it was read the text of the Declaration passed by the Ministers of Health and representatives of the member states of the European region of the World Health Organization. The Declaration outlines the adherence of the parties to available mechanisms for control of infectious diseases, causing the sufferings to people and impeding socio-economic development of the countries. It is also underlined that these diseases are considerably preventable as far as they are connected with four common risk factors (use of tobacco, alcohol, unhealthy nutrition and insufficient physical activity).
Public health policy passed in 2012 for the European region “Health-2020” outlines general interpretation of the importance of social determinants of health and social justice, realization of collective leadership, strengthening of public health systems, introduction of approach based on covering of all stages of life and others. At present, alongside with Global Action Plan of WHO passed in 2013 on prevention and control of infectious diseases, with activity realized at the national level as well as initiatives of regional organizations of economic integration, it is made great number of joint efforts on prevention and control of noncommunicable diseases.
Ashgabat Declaration confirms the adherence to the realization of essential measures on solution of the tasks of “Health-2020” and aimed at improvement of health of everybody and everyone, reduction of inequality in respect of health, consolidation of leadership and collective strategic leadership over prevention and control of noncommunicable diseases.
As it was noted at the ceremony, Turkmenistan fully supports the provision of Declaration and intends together with its partners to do the best at the national and multilateral level in order to realize the undertaken important obligations in concrete actions and deeds in our country.
In the evening, excursions to the sights of white-marbled Ashgabat were organized for participants of the forum.
