view-icon 2053
In this year, winter brought a surprise – after relatively warm first two months of Turkmen winter, the weather has changed cardinally. Without additional preludes, snowy and frosty fact with serious minus temperature set in one day.

As it is informed at the Management of flora and fauna of the Ministry of Nature Protection of Turkmenistan, the employees of the Nature Reserves were engaged in preparation for hibernation long before coming of calendar winter. It was renewed beforehand the structures, examined the tackles, stock, equipment and technique, stored up forages for dieting of animals in open-air cages of the Nature Reserve and in nature during anomalous frosts.

December and January were quite warm. Therefore, on the coast of the Caspian Sea, the birds of passage, including waterfowl, stay too long in this year. There are also such species, which didn’t hurry to leave the territory of northern countries when there was not so frosty and now, they moved to the south. When general cold wave began to drive the bird flocks, some of them settled and feed on the Caspian Sea. This process has been registered and group of skillful ornithologists realized winter calculation of migratory and nonmigratory species of birds on the territory of seacoast of the Caspian Sea and paludal-water lands of Khazar State Nature Reserve.

On the territory of “Ogurjaly” wildlife preserve, where population of gazelles inhabits, forage has been stored enough to feed animals till spring. All essential things have been delivered from mainland in good time for comfort during the activity of the personnel of Khazar Nature Reserve this wildlife preserve belongs to. With support of Amyderya, Repetek, Syunt-Khasardag and Kaplangyr Nature Reserves of the country, nearly four thousand seedlings of desert woody plants and seeds of plants – heliophytes have been also delivered for spring tree-plantings on the island. These are sandy acacia, eastern oleaster, tamarisk, black and white saxaul, poplar and pomegranate. While successful adaptation, they will become in future full residents of the island as well as full-fledged forage for its inhabitants – wild hoofed mammals.

In the north of country, a real winter is going on for a long time in Gaplangyr Nature Reserve and with coming of cold wave, it was established “Siberian” minus temperature. Arctic air locked coastal waters – hibernation areas of pelicans, various species of gooses and swans. Here, having studied the assemblage of waterfowls, the personnel arrange feedboxes and constantly control the hibernating areas and state of birds. Wild hoofed mammals also inhabit here. Winter is also as important and reliable period for them as for flocks of sheep, because lambing takes place here in spring.

To the south, on the territory of Amyderya Nature Reserve, it was prepared a food for deer – from hay stored since autumn from local kinds of grassy plants. Gazelles and wild rams of Badkhyz Nature Reserve will find their dieting along paths or near places of their habitation. Analogous measures are taken by personnel and other State Nature Reserves – Kopetdag, Koytendag, Repetek and new one – “Bereketli Garagum”.
