On the day when whole country celebrates significant date devoted to the national banner of Motherland, the State Flag of Turkmenistan was hoisted on the highest peak of the country – Ayrybaba. Patriotic action was organized owing to the efforts of mountaineering clubs – “Agama” of Ashgabat and “Mert” of Balkan with assistance of the personnel of Koytendag State Nature Reserve of the Ministry of Nature Protection of Turkmenistan.

The height of peak is 3 139 meters above-sea level. Koytendag with its height “looks” in severe world of highlands. Snow mantle covers these slopes more than half a year – from October till May. Those, who take chances to perform the ascent of the peak in winter, face with piercing wind and extremely low temperatures. In this season of the year, the weather conditions on the peak Ayrybaba are similar to those, which are met by sportsmen on famous peaks of the planet at the height of alpinist season. Therefore, traditional ascent of Ayrybaba peak timed to the State Flag Day became a good school of mastership for the Turkmen sportsmen.

Prior to the ascent, the alpinists arranged base camp on the slopes of Koytendag at the height of 2000 meters. From here, in the morning, on the threshold of the State Flag Day, they went to the storm of peak. Having overcome the slope and juniper open woodland with snowdrifts, they appeared in unique grove of honeysuckle, where imperceptible bush is able to grow into large perennial trees owing to unusual climatic conditions. Further, the sportsmen faced with snow lobbies and rocky crests of highland part of mountain ridge, which conditions tuned out quite severe even for growth of “owner” of Turkmen mountains – juniper.

Because of deep friable blanket of snow, it was decided to correct the classic route of ascent, its final length run along north-west rocky crest of the peak. After midday, the alpinists reached the peak, where the national banner has been hoisted. In total, 9 alpinists from Ashgabat and Balkanabat reached Ayrybaba peak in this year. They are experienced sportsmen – participants of expeditions to Tien Shan, Ararat and the Caucasus as well as the youth, who opened a way to the world of mountain peaks owing to this ascent.

In Turkmenistan, it is increased the number of fans of healthy life-style, actively developed the sports and alpinism - not the exception. So, the last year was marked with successful ascent of the northernmost mountain over 7,000 metres high of the planet – peak Khan Tengri in Tien Shan, which was first performed not by some of our sportsmen but whole team from Turkmenistan. It is ponderable achievement of our alpinists, who hoisted in August 2013 the banner of Motherland at the 7010-meter height in junction of borders of Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan and China.

Coverage of this kind of sport is widened as well. Mountaineering club “Mert” registered in Balkanabat a year ago also kept the company to “Agama” Mountaineering club, which celebrated in the last year its 20th anniversary. In the last year, it was also held the first in the history of the country Championship and Cup Tournament on rock climbing organized with assistance of the State Committee of Turkmenistan for sports.
