The first preparatory meeting for the high-level international conference on global transport cooperation, which will be held in September this year in Ashgabat, took place in the conference hall of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan.

Deputy Executive Secretary of the Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) Andrey Vasilyev, Head of the Permanent Delegation of the International Road Transport Union Igor Rounov, Head of the OSCE Centre in Ashgabat Ivo Petrov and the representatives of the United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS) and the Intergovernmental Commission (IGC) TRACECA took part in discussing the agenda of the high-level forum organized on the initiative of President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov in cooperation with the major international organisations and transport agencies. The heads of ministries of Turkmenistan and diplomatic missions accredited in our country attended the meeting.

Focusing on the critical importance of this global agenda issue under discussion, the guests expressed their gratitude to the Turkmen leader for putting forward the initiative to host the high-level forum in Ashgabat at the 68th session of the UN General Assembly. The main theme of the Ashgabat conference will be the role of transport and transit corridors in promoting international cooperation, stability and sustainable development.

It was noted at the preparatory meeting that Turkmenistan actively advocated for closer, fruitful and mutually beneficial cooperation with UN agencies, particularly the UNECE, the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UNESCAP) and the major partners of the United Nations, including the International road Transport Union. In this context, Turkmenistan offers to implement the expertise of these organisations to discuss in detail the possibility of promoting the Model Highway initiative in Central Asia, which is fully consistent with the prospects for development of international transport routes.

The participants expressed belief that the Ashgabat conference, which is in active preparation, would become a new word in the fruitful international dialogue.
