Unprecedented work on landscape gardening of cities and settlements, creation of woodlands, gardens, parks and squares is realized in Turkmenistan. In this connection, it is demanded constant replenishment of vegetable material with new decorative and useful plants resistant to sharply continental climate of our country. Botanic Garden of the Institute of Botany of the Academy of Sciences of Turkmenistan is engaged in this activity since its foundation. This year, it celebrates its 85th anniversary. Purpose of researches carried out here is the biological study of introduced kinds of flora, their selection, development and acclimatization.



As a result of the specialists’ labor of many years, the collection fund of Botanic Garden has today over 3000 species, varieties, sorts of trees and bushes, tropical and subtropical plantings, flower and decorative plants. One of major tasks of scientific researches is the preservation and enrichment of collection owing to floristic wealth of different regions of the planet as well as our country, where intent attention is paid to the study of rare and disappearing species entered in Red Data Book of Turkmenistan with subsequent restoration of their natural populations in natural habitant. From this collection, it is selected the highly decorative firm views, thank to which inimitable “green” architecture of Turkmen cities is created.



During recent years the specialists of Botanic Garden have introduced to landscape gardening of cities a great number of plants: these are Albizia julibrissin or silk tree acacia– one of the most beautiful trees of Caucasian dendroflora, Gillis Caesalphinia possessing drought and salinity resistance properties, Caucasian hackberry – extremely drought resistant plant, evergreen magnolia well sustaining the urban environment, etc.

Among shrubs-aliens the most interesting ones are Japanese quince, horizontal cotoneaster. Ashgabat parks are also decorated with Sharon rose, trailing mahonia, trilobite almonds, Indian crape myrtle, wonderfully and continuously blooming in the hottest season. Among coniferous plants – Arizona cypress and evergreen pines – black, Crimean and mountain - are used in landscape gardening already for many years. All aforementioned plants are drought resistant, grow quickly, light requiring and very decorative, in various years were delivered from Japan, China, America, Caucuses and Central Asian countries.



Upgrading of urban environment with smart green attire serves not only for aesthetic purposes, but also powerful ecological factor influencing on microclimatic conditions. Capital designers have developed numerous methods of floristic design of streets, parks and squares creating picturesque infrastructure of urbanized living space attaching it an artistic expressiveness.
