A meeting of the Coordinating Committee for the National Water Policy

The Coordination Committee for the National Policy of Turkmenistan held the fourth meeting in the conference hall of the President Hotel in Ashgabat. The heads and leading specialists of the ministries and departments of our country, the experts of the UN Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) and the representatives of the European Union, the UN Regional Centre for Preventive Diplomacy for Central Asia (UNRCCA), the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development and other international organisations and institutions attended the meeting.

The meeting agenda covered a number of the issues related to the improvement of water use efficiency, the national water policy and international cooperation in this sphere.

Detailed information on the ongoing work in Turkmenistan to improve the national laws regulating the national water policy and the practical measures taken to enhance water use efficiency was provided to the meeting participants.

The international practices in increasing water use efficiency and elaborating the adequate mechanisms of coordinated water resources management were considered during the meeting. The outcomes of the projects on drinking water supply and the use of transboundary waters and their resources, which are implemented in Central Asia in the framework of technical cooperation with the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development and the German Society for International Cooperation, were presented during the meeting.

International consultants and UNECE experts made presentations on the international conventions on environmental protection and sustainable management of natural resources, including the Convention on Long-Range Transboundary Air Pollution, the Convention on the Rights to Water, the Convention on the Transboundary Effects of Industrial Accidents and other international agreements.
