The first sets of medals of the international rapid chess tournament being held in the capital of Hungary, Budapest have been awarded. Two participants from Turkmenistan stood on the winner’s stand: M. Atabaev stood on the highest step and his brother Yu. Atabaev won a bronze medal of the international tournament. Both chess players, who study at Ashgabat chess school of Ashgabat Committee for Sports, are International Masters of Sports.
The national chess tournament has been held in Geoktepe lately. The participants representing the teams of Ahal, Lebap and Dashoguz Velayat and Ashgabat were divided into 3 groups: Masters of Sports and higher, Candidates for Masters of Sports and schoolchildren. The Swiss system tournament consisted of 11 rounds.
A. Kakageldyev from Ashgabat, who gained 9 points out of 11 possible, ranked first in the group of the most eminent chess players. H. Dovletov and R. Nazarov, who gained the same number of points – 8.5, ranked second in this group. S. Muradov from Ashgabat chess school won a gold medal in the schoolchildren’s group. He had gained a victory two rounds before the tournament finished. Two chess championships in two age groups – under 10 and under 14 – will start in Ashgabat on May 5 and last till May 14.
The national tennis championship, which brought together about 120 tennis players from all the regions of the country, was held on the tennis courts of the Ashgabat sports complex on Saturday and Sunday. As was expected, Masters of Sports A. Ernepesov and A. Prenko gained victories in the men’s and women’s singles.
They were the winners in the doubles as well.
The national tennis team of Turkmenistan will go to France soon to attend international training sessions. These sessions will help the men’s national team to prepare for the Davis Cup, one of the most prestigious tennis tournaments, which will be held this summer. The Turkmen tennis players will compete for medals in Group Three Asia/Oceania Zone of these prestigious competitions for the first time this year. Our tennis players brilliantly performed in the competitions which were held in Dubai (UAE) last year and won gold medals in Group Four Asia/Oceania Zone, thus reserving a place in Group Three of the 2014Davis Cup.
The national track and field championship was held in Ashgabat. The competitions in long jump and running were held at the Kopetdag sports complex and the competitions in javelin and discus throw and shot put were held at Dagdan stadium.
The team from Ashgabat ranked first in the running and discus and javelin throw tournaments and athletes from Lebap – in the long jump tournament and the marathon. I. Velihanova from Ashgabat took the first place in the heptathlon. This athletic competition includes seven field and track events, namely, 100 m sprint, 200 m hurdles race, long jump, high jump, javelin throw, shot put and 800 m race. The first place in the tournament allowed the athlete to gain the Master of Sports title.
