For protection of marine environment of the Caspian Sea

The 5th session of Conference of parties of framework convention on protection of marine environment of the Caspian Sea (Tehran convention) started its work in Ashgabat. On the instruction of the head of state, organization and holding of this session is realized by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan, Ministry of Nature Protection of Turkmenistan and State enterprise for issues of the Caspian Sea at the President of Turkmenistan.

Delegations of officials and specialists of the state structures of environment protection and nature management of Azerbaijan, Iran, Kazakhstan, Russia and Turkmenistan, representatives of international organizations – United Nations Development Program, Food and Agricultural Organization of the United Nations, European Union and others take part in the work of three-day ecological forum, being held with assistance of temporal Secretariat of Tehran convention at the Regional Office of United Nations Environment Program for Europe.

Delegation of temporal Secretariat of Tehran Convention at the head of director and regional representative of the Regional Office of United Nations Environment Program for Europe Yan Dusik arrived in Ashgabat for participation in the forum.

The agenda of the meeting included the discussion and agreement of major basic documents to Tehran convention with a view of provision of reliable system of ecology protection of the largest in the planet internal reservoir – Caspian Sea.

In the course of current meeting of the Conference of the parties, it was held thorough, interested view exchange. Within its framework, the session proceeded to the consideration and agreement of positions on regular documents aimed at preservation of biological diversity of the Caspian Sea.

Importance of adoption of these documents is indisputable. Many species of flora and fauna of the Caspian Sea are endemics and make up valuable gene pool of biological diversity of the region, having huge significance of planetary scale.

It was underlined that only responsible, strictly scientific approach to the activity on the sea will provide successful development of fishery for long-term prospect, without damage on fish fauna of the region. Realization of systematic monitoring of the state of biological resources and marine environment of the Caspian Sea, holding of wide complex of researches in this field, ecological education of population were ranked among vital tasks.
