A meeting of steering committee for TAPI gas pipeline project

A regular 18th meeting of steering committee for Turkmenistan-Afghanistan-Pakistan-India gas pipeline project (TAPI) was held in Ashgabat. Heads and representatives of the ministries and departments of all participating countries of the project as well as Asian Development Bank (ADB), which is the Transactional Adviser, took part in its work.

The day before, in the course of meeting of Technical workgroup of TAPI project, where relevant specialists of participating countries and experts of ADB discussed and agreed the issues included into agenda of the current meeting of Steering Committee.

Within the framework of meeting, it was discussed the issues of creation of consortium TAPI Ltd., which tasks will contain the determination of sources and trends of financing the project, election jointly with the parties of the project and Transactional Adviser of the leader of consortium, as well as preparation of Additional Agreement on prolongation of natural gas purchase contracts, Technical agreement on project. It will be held the negotiations on transit of natural gas.

It was also listened to the report on work done by Transactional Adviser and considered the issue on making the phased schedule of realization of the project.

It is envisaged that total length of gas pipeline will be 1735 km, including 200 km will run though territory of Turkmenistan, 735 km – through territory of Afghanistan, 800 km - through territory of Pakistan and reach Fazilka settlement at the border of India. Annual capacity of gas pipeline will come to over 30 billion cubic meters.

Participants considered and approved major results of work of the 26th session of Technical working group on TAPI gas pipeline project held in Ashgabat the day before. Within its framework, the issues connected with technical aspects of forcing of the project have been agreed and solved as well.

Having confirmed the high interest of their countries in soonest practical realization of the project on construction of TAPI gas pipeline and deliveries of Turkmen natural gas, the meeting participants have also discussed a series of other issues on earlier reached agreements aimed at activization of joint activity. It was also approved the plans for near future, including on Additional Agreement on prolongation of terms of natural gas purchase contracts, Technical agreement on project.

Moreover, during the session, the schedule of next meetings of Technical working group and steering committee of TAPI was agreed.
