The regional conference on “Economic assessment of land degradation” was opened at the conference hall of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan.
The representative forum brought together ecologists, specialists, and experts from China, the US, South Korea, Israel, Turkey, Iran, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, and Tajikistan. Among the foreign guests to the conference are representatives of international organisations, including the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), the Regional Environmental Center for Central Asia, the German Technical Cooperation Agency (GTZ) , the Asian Development Bank, the Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe, the UN Regional Centre for Preventive Diplomacy for Central Asia, Turkish Cooperation and Coordination Agency, the International Center for Agricultural Research in the Dry Areas, and other international ogranisations and specialized agencies.
The conference is organized by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan, the Ministry of Agriculture, the Ministry of Nature Protection of Turkmenistan, the Academy of Sciences jointly with the Secretariat of the UN Convention to Combat Desertification.
Forum participants considered the Concept of the economics of land degradation, which specifies causes of land degradation or other ecological systems, the effectiveness of the economic assessment, management decisions taken based on it, as well as exchange of experience in this sphere.
Those speaking during the forum highlighted the positive experience of Turkmen and foreign scientists and specialists in the assessment of ecosystem services that provide humanity with natural resources, healthy environment, other ecologically and economically significant products in the Central Asian countries.
