Turkmenistan was elected to the Standing Committee of the Regional Committee (SCRC) for a three-year term: from September 16, 2014 to the 67th Session of the WHO Regional Committee in 2017 at the 64th session of the World Health Organization Regional Committee, which was held in Copenhagen (Denmark).

The membership in the SCRC will allow Turkmenistan as well as 11 more Member States to act on behalf of the Regional Committee and represent its interests to ensure the implementation of the decisions and policies adopted by the Committee, advise the Regional Committee in accordance with the needs and requests of the latter and, where appropriate, advise the Director of the WHO Regional Office for the period between the sessions of the Regional Committee.

The Ashgabat Declaration on the Prevention and Control of Noncommunicable Diseases in the Context of Health 2020 was approved at the 64th session of the WHO Regional Committee.

The Declaration was a key outcome document of the conference, which was held on the initiative of the Government of Turkmenistan in Ashgabat in December 2013. The Declaration identified three areas in the fight against non-communicable diseases (NCDs), which are in full conformity with the principles of the Health 2020 strategy and the Global Action Plan for the Prevention and Control of NCDs: activity in all fields of public administration, intensification of efforts at the country level and adoption of measures to protect present and future generations from the devastating health effects of tobacco smoking.

This is that Director of the Regional Office for Europe Zsuzsanna Jakab wrote in her letter to the President of Turkmenistan.

She also wrote that the WHO Regional Office for Europe welcomes the commitment of Turkmenistan to becoming the first country in which the prevalence of smoking among adults is less than 5 percent and also has high hopes that Turkmenistan will be the main driving force to free the European Region from tobacco and hope that Turkmenistan will support the offer the WHO Regional Office for Europe for cooperation.

Also, Zsuzsanna Jakab expressed gratitude to the Turkmen leader for the warm welcome and the discussion of health issues during her recent visit to our country. She said that she believed that all the meetings held in Turkmenistan had contributed greatly to laying the groundwork for the expansion and intensification of cooperation between Turkmenistan and WHO on a long term. On behalf of the Regional Office of the World Health Organization for Europe Zsuzsanna Jakab assured the Turkmen leader that it would do everything possible to put bilateral agreements into practice.
