Champions prepare for the Asian Championships

The men’s final of the National Greco-Roman and Freestyle Wrestling Championships was held at the Galkynysh sports complex in Ashgabat.

Azamat Jumaev, a student of the Olimp sports school from Ashgabat, who had made his debut in the ‘adult’ competitions, won the gold medal in the under 60-kg category.

Another debutant of this age group International Master of Sports Amanali Ataev from Ashgabat, who had won the silver medal of the Greco-Roman Asian Junior Championships last year, ranked the third in the under 74-kg category. Yazgeldy Kadyrov from Mary took the first place in this group. His fellow-townsman ranked the first in under 66-kg category.


Ilyas Esenov (under 84 kg), Arslan Saparmamedov (under 96 kg), Annamamed Ataev (under 55 kg) and Muhammed Orazov (under 120 kg) from Ashgabat won the gold medals in the Greco-Roman wrestling tournaments.

Many young athletes competed in the Greco-Roman wrestling events. Saparmurat Muradov (under 55 kg), Ramil Rejepov (under 60 kg), Ramazan Kambarov (under 66 kg), Eldar Safiulin (under 84 kg), Nuryagdy Garataev (under 96 kg) and Hakberdy Annamov (under 120 kg) from Ashgabat and Merdan Joraev from Turkmenabat (under 74 kg) won the gold medals.


These days the men’s teams are preparing for the Asian Greco-Roman and Freestyle Championship, which will be held in Seoul (Republic of Korea) on February 16-18. In the spring the Turkmen sportsmen will compete in the qualification tournaments for quota places for the London 2012 Olympic Games.
