Today, the Turkmen athletes have won two bronze medals at the IV Asian Beach Games, which are taking place on the seashore of the Thai island of Phuket. Our sportsmen– Muhammed Artykov (under 66 kg) and Aina Jumakulieva (under 52 kg) – achieved success in the kurash tournament. Also, the Turkmen athletes gained victories in a number of team competitions.

On his way towards the medal M. Artykov had three bouts on the sandy ring Patong beach. He pinned down a Mongolian wrestler in the 1/8 finals, and he knocked the Uzbek athlete out of the competition for medals. In the semi-final the Turkmen athlete fought with a sportsman from the team of Iran, who eventually became the winner in this weight category. The second medallist is A. Jumakulieva.

Our women's basketball team played with the team from Nepal. Our basketball players coached by Irina Yakovleva ‘crushed’ their opponents 18-6. The men’s team of Turkmenistan held two matches. Our sportsmen played with Oman team in the first match. Our basketball players kept ahead of their opponents during the match, but the Omani basketball players made several successful attacks at the last minute of the match and could swing the game in their favour 14-13.

This disappointing loss spurred our athletes on to greater effort in the second match with the 2013 Asian Games winners – Afghanistan. Turkmen basketball players took the initiative in the first seconds of the match and held it till the end of the match. Turkmen sportsmen defeated their opponents 10-7.

Turkmen basketball players will continue to participate in the group tournament on November 16. Our volleyball and handball teams will join them. Kurash, free wrestling and petanque competitions will continue. Thai boxers from Turkmenistan will hold their first bouts on November 18.

To date, Turkmenistan team has 7 medals - one gold, two silver and four bronze - in its assets. This result enables our team to rank among the top ten in the team competitions.
