The 12th World Belt Wrestling Championship and the 1st World Goresh Championship closed in the capital of Turkmenistan. The sports festival that lasted three days is crowned with the triumph of Turkmenistan national team! 16 medals out of 32 of the World Goresh Championship; our palvans, who are the worthy successors of the national school of wrestling founded by our glorious ancestors in ancient times, won half. Turkmen wrestlers earned 8 gold, 7 silver and 1 bronze medals in eight weight categories through tough competition. Their rivals from foreign countries could win only one silver and one bronze medals. They were many, not only in the goresh tournament.
The competitions for the title of the strongest belt and goresh wrestlers of the world brought together about 200 sportsmen from 23 countries. They competed for 27 sets of medals, including 108 gold, silver and bronze medals, in four events.
The results of the competitions show that Turkmenistan national team, who won 45 medals, including 16 gold, 14 silver and 15 bronze medals, is the absolute leader in the international tournament. Though Turkmen palvans had ranked second in the world team standings after their nearest rivals – the national team of the Russian Federation prior to the World Championship, Turkmenistan took the lead over the Russia team.
Sportsmen from the Russian Federation, who gained 16 medals (5 gold, 3 silver and 8 bronze) stood in second place in the team event of the international tournament.
Ukraine national team who finished with 9 medals (2 gold, 3 silver and 4 bronze) climbed to the third spot. 20 referees from foreign countries and 15 referees from Turkmenistan were involved to watch the matches. They were specially trained during the international seminars and training sessions.
Unlike the belt wrestling competitions, the final standings in the goresh tournament were determined within a round robin schedule.
