The Greco-Roman Wrestling Championship of Turkmenistan was held in Ahal Velayat. It brought together the strongest athletes in the classical style from all the regions of the country and Ashgabat.
The main aim of the competitions was to determine the best athletes for the national team of Turkmenistan, who will perform in the international qualification events for the 2016 Olympic Games in Brazil, including the world and Asian championships, which will be held in Las Vegas, United States in September and Doha, Qatar in August respectively. The national tournament in Ahal Velayat is one of the most important steps toward these important events.
The wrestlers from Ashgabat ranked first in the team event. They have four victories of eight possible. Arslan Orashev (under 66 kilogrammes category), Aman Ataev (under 80 kilogrammes weight category), Mayil Bahlulov mail (under 98 kilogrammes category) and Arslan Saparmammedov (under 130 kilogrammes category) rose to the highest stage of the podium.
The athletes from Mary Velayat took the second place in the team event. Three of them won the title: Sapa Jumayev (under to 59 kilogrammes category), Abdyresul Hummyev (under 71 kilogrammes category) and Dovran Yarimob (under 85 kilogrammes category).
The representatives of Lebap Velayat ranked third in the team event thanks to the gold medal of Shermet Permanov, who performed in the under 75 kilogrammes category. He is not only the strongest wrestler of the country, but also one of the best athletes in the world sports arena.
He ranked seventh in the World Championship, which was held in Tashkent, Uzbekistan last year, and won a bronze medal in the Asian Games in Incheon, Korea. These accomplishments enabled Sh. Permanov to rank fourth among the top ten athletes of 2014 in Turkmenistan and gave him a chance to qualify for the leading international sporting event of 2016.
