Turkmenistan-US Business Forum in Ashgabat

Ashgabat hosted Turkmenistan-US Business Forum that aimed to develop new effective approaches to implementing the tremendous potential of bilateral cooperation and contribute to enhancing traditional trade and economic relations, business contacts and scientific and technological partnership.

The meeting held at the Mizan Business Centre brought together representatives of key ministries and departments of Turkmenistan, industrial structures, banking and scientific institutions, the Union of Industrialists and Entrepreneurs of the country.

The US delegation included the heads, experts and specialists of such famous companies as Bell Heliopters, FLIR Systems, Case New Holland, John Deere, Zeppelin/Caterpillar, General Electric, Ford, Microsoft, IBM, Nicklaus Design as well as financial experts and representatives of academic circles and the US Agency for International Development.

Those speaking during the forum opening ceremony underlined the importance of such business meetings that served as an efficient mechanism for promoting trade and economic cooperation, joint projects, enhancing effective relations in various spheres, and intensifying investment activity in developing dynamic partnership between Turkmenistan and the United States.

Executive Director of Turkmenistan-US Business Council Eric Stewart emphasized that holding business forums in the Turkmen capital had become a tradition that promoted to establishing close relations between potential partners and opening up new opportunities for cooperation in traditional areas.

Those speaking during the forum focused on the development of cooperation in an innovative way. This theme was considered and specified during the panel discussions dedicated to the use of innovative technologies in industry and agriculture.

The first panel discussion focused on the modern conditions for development of industry and manufacturing and the issues of practical application of innovations to improve the quality and competitiveness of products. The heads of the Academy of Sciences of Turkmenistan and specialists of some sectors of the national economy of our country – users of industrial technology, including the Turkmenhowayollary State National Service and Ministry of Water Industry. The US delegation was represented by managers of such companies as Microsoft, Bell Helicopter, General Electric and Valmont Industries, who prepared the proposals aimed at stimulating the innovative activity in the partnership dialogue. Forum participants exchanged views on the future of innovations in the industrial complex and discussed promising ideas for a technological breakthrough of a number of industries.

The second panel discussion focused on the current state and prospects for the use of advanced technologies and the results of applied research in various sectors of the agricultural complex. The detailed reviews of the programmes on development of the agricultural sectors of Turkmenistan, in particular livestock sector and veterinary science, cost-effective use of resources and development of agricultural production, including through attracting local entrepreneurs, were presented during the session.

Specialists of Case New Holland and CNFA shared their vision of the important areas of the innovative cooperation. The fact that representatives of agricultural higher educational institutions of the two countries participated in the forum vividly illustrated a science-based approach to partnership.

The third session was dedicated to the role of financing in the economic development. Turkmen specialists speaking during the session noted that the work of the financial system in our country was aimed at developing a socially oriented economy, supporting manufacturers, private sector and market economy and achieving the goals of the national programmes and reforms. Moreover, the national financial policy is closely related to the globalization of modern economic relations between countries.

Representatives of the International Finance Corporation, heads of the State Bank for Foreign Economic Affairs of Turkmenistan and the Rysgal Joint Stock Commercial Bank, financial managers of John Deere, MoneyGram and other American delegates focused on this aspect. Those speaking spotlighted the tendencies and practical issues as well as exchange of experience in business management and training specialists for the financial sector.

US businessmen held a number of meetings at the ministries and departments of Turkmenistan, including the oil and gas, energy, transport and communications, agricultural, information technology, health care, science and education and financial sectors. Special attention was paid to the implementation of high-tech joint projects that could be able to widen the sphere of innovations in Turkmen-American cooperation.
